1984 is a fictional book that takes place in a dystopian society. Since 1984 is fiction it can 't relate to contemporary society, right? I say that 1984 is in fact a novel that relates to what our society has become. In the article “George Orwell and the Mad World: The Anti Universe of 1984”, written again by Ralph Ranald states that “Orwell 's 1984 is about religion reversed, law and government reversed, and above all, language reversed: not simply corrupted, but reversed” ( Ranald 1).I disagree with this statement because everything about 1984 is corrupted not reversed. In the story Winston rents an upstairs room owned by a man named Mr. Charrington. Mr.Charrington looks and acts like if he is an ordinary man, like he has nothing to do with the government, never less though as said in the text “ Something had also change in Mr. Charrington 's appearance. His eye fell on the fragments of the glass paperweight. “Pick up those pieces” he said sharply” (Orwell 224). Corruption is smeared all over him. Not only did he act like he wasn 't part of the government he took out one of his best customers. The definition of corruption is “dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power” and Mr. Charrington was dishonest to Winston and went against him. This relates to many incidents that has happened in society today. The government is corrupt in the united states like any other countries government. There are people in our government that do things like Mr. Charrington did, like steal money from hardworking taxpayers or having scandals like President Clinton had. There is more corruption in 1984 then Mr. Charrington 's incident. “ A day never passed when spies and saboteurs acting under his directions were not unmasked by the Thought Police” (Orwell 13). The Thought Police are considered the authority of Oceania. I consider the Thought Police an act of corruption because not only do they spy on you through telescreens but they can punish you if they think you were thinking of rebelling. I think that the Thought Police is a type of dictatorship. I say this because if you don 't do what they
