Music was a huge part of people’s lives in “The Machine Stops.” If music wasn’t playing through the Machine, their day to day lives didn’t seem normal. Vashti expressed her annoyance by saying, “There never was such an unfortunate woman as myself. I can never be sure of my music now. It gets worse and worse each time I summon it” (“The Machine Stops”) In the same way, people today have become very reliant on music. When people are driving, they are always playing music to keep them entertained. For instance, when people are driving down the road and their radio stops working they tend to become uncomfortable. In the same way, people are also obsessed with television in today’s world. One major problem with television is, it is preventing people from stepping outside because they are so addicted to a show that they have no intention on being outside. Television has become one of the worst technologies because it hurts people social skills and they don’t know how to act in the real world without it. In “The Machine Stops,” all Vashti has to do to eat is press a button and her food is provided for her. She doesn’t have to leave her room to order food or buy ingredients to cook food, everything is provided for her. Likewise, people today can call a restaurant and have food delivered to their doorstep and never have to take a step. This has caused people to become spoiled and less people are learning how to cook these days because they are not required to cook anymore. Another huge technological addition to today’s world is medication. If people are sick nowadays, they can call their doctor, get a prescription, and have it delivered to their house. It has allowed people to stay at home and not even go to the doctor because they can literally do everything with one phone call.
