The MS-13 Gang

Decent Essays
Catastrophically, there are so many dangerous gangs, cartels, and terrorist groups in our society today that it is hard to narrow down which group is the most dangerous. Despondently, they all play a part in terrorizing our nation. Furthermore, the association amongst drug trafficking activity, violent crimes, and gang affiliation are highly documented. Moreover, gang members that sell drugs are considerably more violent than those that do not sell drugs (Levinthal, 2012). However, if I were to choose one, I would pick the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) street gang. Mara Salvatrucha was formed in the 1980’s in Los Angeles by Salvadoran immigrant youth and is one of the largest street gangs in the United States and northern Central America. Furthermore, a …show more content…
Unfortunately, the MS-13 gang has developed a reputation for extreme brutality and ostensibly has transformed into a fast-expanding, transnationally organized crime network. Additionally, the FBI warned that the MS-13 gang has evolved from an alliance of loosely structured cells into a unified and sophisticated organization that is engaged in retail drug trafficking, rape, murder, blackmail, auto theft, human smuggling, robbery, and international terrorism. Subsequently, in 2004, the FBI, who was concerned by both the ferociousness and the geographical expansion of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, that they declared the organization the top priority of its criminal enterprise branch and additionally, created a National Gang Task Force designed specifically to disassemble the group (Wolf, 2012). While this is just one gang their notoriety is overwhelming and the continual growth is terrifying. Nonetheless, there are so many different gangs, cartels, and terrorists in our society and none of them are

This would be a huge benefit to the MS and would give them more protection in the barrios with other Latin gangs. For the act of the Mexican mafia taking the MS under their wing, MS had to return the favor to the mafia and be their hit men. This is when they became MS-13, the 13 was added because they were now apart of “the M” which is also know as the Mexican mafia. M is the 13th letter of the alphabet and that’s why the Mexican mafia uses the number 13. After the alliance between the MS-13 and the Mexican mafia, MS-13 has grown so much that the FBI believes that they spread over forty-two states in the United Sates and they believe they have approximately fifty thousand members worldwide.…

MS-13 recently became known in the east coast gang culture. Instead of operating independently from each other MS-13 is beginning to come together as they recognize power in numbers and organization of the gang. By doing this MS-13 has a much tighter organization, stronger structure, and instead of various groups being self supporting, there is one leader. The leader is in charge of member’s payment of the dues and they organize the criminal acts in which members engage. This makes MS-13 vary similar to what has been referred to as “traditional organized criminal families”, similar to the Italian Mafia.…

Americans generally want to believe they live in a country of safety, freedom, and well-being. They don’t want real crime where they live in the suburbs because that’s only something that happens in impoverished countries and areas of the country that no one vacations to. The truth of the matter is that we have well organized and established gangs in America working with entities such as Daesh, Al-Qaeda, Taliban, Hezbollah, and others right here in our backyards. One of the major players in this atrocious arrangement is La Mara Salvatrucha, more commonly known as MS-13. MS-13 is a Los Angeles based gang comprised of mostly Salvadorans and people of other Central American descent.…

MS-13 originated out of Central America and Mexico, and have expanded themselves into the United States as well as Canada (Ortiz, 2012). Furthermore, MS-13 has the capabilities of orchestrating sophisticated criminal enterprise across national borders, making them an international gang with members ranging from 11 to 40 years of age. Interestingly, MS-13 has the capabilities of forming alliances with other gangs for the purposes of criminal organizations and most other gangs will adhere to MS-13's demands due to MS-13's extreme violence they are well known for. One contributing factor that makes MS-13 so powerful is their flexibilities and the broad range of expertise among it's members. MS-13 members have capabilities of conducting "white collar" crimes such as computer crimes and wire fraud, while others specialize in street crimes such as carjacking or selling drugs.…

The brutality of this gang stands unmatched by any other major gang; the only true rival is 18th street gang which is also a Hispanic gang. In late 2010 El Salvador had a total of 27,000 gang members from both MS-13 and 18th St. The violence between the two was so intense that governments had to step in order to settle some sort of truce just to control the violence. It does not stop there however, MS has gone head to head with a very dangerous and powerful cartel known as Los Zetas. In 2010 MS had a run in with Zetas over territory which resulted in a bloody war that ended with a truce and an agreement between the two; MS would control the southern portion of the territory while the Zetas would control the northern area (Farah 2012).…

As it turns out the presence of females in gangs has increased considerably in recent years. Female members have evolved and are very similar to male members in various aspects including the types of illegal acts they commit and reasons for joining a gang. But for every similarity there is an underlying difference between the two genders. There is a very large misrepresentation of studies done on the participation of female members in gangs and therefore, a definite number of female gang members is hard to determine.…
