A little surprised, Brooke acknowledged the meeting and went about her business. “Thanks Jan, I will meet with him as soon as I am finished with the narcotic count”. Brooke felt extremely uncomfortable with this drug-sharing situation. She dispensed the medications to the staff and inconspicuously pocketed a few large vials of narcotics.…
Beauty is highly subjective. What might seem magnificent to one's eye, may be unpleasing to a different individual. How one sees himself/herself is a key factor to how they live their life in many cases. This theme shows through in many stories throughout chapter 5 in Legacies by Jan Zlotnik Schmidt and Lynne Crockett, including “The Beauty Treatment” by Stacey Richter and “The Story of My Body” by Judith Ortiz Cofer. Both stories are based on adolescent girls and their appearances.…
In American culture, aesthetic beauty, especially when it concerns women and their faces, are highly valued. In Lucy Grealy’s memoir, Autobiography of a Face, she examines and criticizes society’s excessive emphasis of impossible beauty standards, and how such ideas can negatively impact a young girl’s self-esteem. She tells the story of how her disfigurement in her lower right jaw caused by cancer brought her into an unending life of bullying, weariness from failed surgical procedures, and depression due to the instilled thought that her face needed to be fixed. Although Grealy’s physical pain was no doubt part of the cause of her distress, it is not the most painful aspect but the constant mental battles with her own identity against society.…
Emphysema Emphysema, along with other diseases, is collectively known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This disease damages the alveoli, also known as air sacs. Shortness of breath results as the alveoli are gradually damaged. The leading cause of emphysema is smoking, but this disease can also be caused by long-term exposure to other airborne irritants. Emphysema can be present in the body for years without any symptoms.…

Emphysema is a chronic lung disease, which damages the air sacs called alveoli by causing shortness of breath (dyspnea) due to the enlargement of lung sacs. Emphysema is also known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Ontario Lung Association,2015). Emphysema is a disease, which not only destroys the lung air sacs but it also reduces the amount of oxygen that can reach the bloodstream. Smoking is one of the main reasons for the cause of emphysema. Therefore, it occurs mostly to the people who smokes and it occurs very slowly (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2015).…

For this discussion post, I decided to research emphysema. Emphysema is a long-term lung disease and one of the main types of COPD. People with this disease has a hard time blowing all there air out in there lungs. As the tissue in the air sacs within the lungs start disappearing, air pockets start developing. Then the air gets trapped within those pockets causing the lungs to enlarge.…
COPD is diagnosed through a series of assessments. A doctor will take into account the signs and symptoms and clinical presentation of the patient, as well as family history and test results. These tests include lung function test such as spirometry.. Other tests that may be used are Chest X-rays, CT scan of the chest and arterial blood gases. These tests, in addition to helping diagnosing COPD, can determine the severity of the disease process. Lung function tests measure how much air you can breathe in and out, how fast you can breathe air out, and how well your lungs deliver oxygen to your blood.…
Paul Kalanithi was an English major turned neurosurgeon by the age of 35. However, when he was diagnosed with lung cancer he decided to fulfill his dream of being an author. In his personal memoir “When Breath Becomes Air”, Paul Kalanithi uses personal experiences to explain the effect of death on the living through logos, ethos, and pathos. When the doctors informed Kalanithi that he had stage IV lung cancer he knew his time was running out, so he decided to do the one thing he had left: write a book. The poignant memoir starts off with a forward written by Abraham Verghese and then continues into a prologue.…
Being an immigrant is a title, but I view it more as a story, my story. On my way to America I’m reciting , “Dil Dil Pakistan Jaan Jaan Pakistan”, in my mind. The literal translation of that is “Heart Heart Pakistan Soul Soul Pakistan”. I was the definition of a stereotypical immigrant. A heavy Pakistani accent, for sure a curry lover, and of course I wanted to go to Harvard, the only option available for me.…
