There was a lot going on in the U.S. right before the Civil War which makes sense because, as we know now, a war was in the process of breaking out. At the heart of the matter was the issue of slavery. Slavery usually brings to mind the image of a black person in a field, laboring away for no pay. There is no argument about whether they were discriminated against. It is evident any where you look. One place you could look is Mississippi 's declaration of their secession from the Union in which they state as a cause for their secession: "It has grown until it denies the right of property in slaves . . ." This is referring to the hostility towards slavery in the North and how they are stifling the South. In the South slaves, whom were their "mudsill", weren 't even regarded as human beings. They were seen as property. Discrimination to the fullest by any standards, no question. Another place you could look to find evidence of this discrimination is in the article depicting Alabama 's slave codes titled "ALABAMA LAWS GOVERNING SLAVES" which states: "No slave can leave the 'tenement ' of his master (or other person with whom he lives) without a written pass or token indicating that he has permission from his master . . ." Master is defined as "having or showing very great skill or proficiency." As if their "master" can do the jobs that slaves do better than they can. They evidently can 't because otherwise they would be doing it. Another way discrimination can be seen in this excerpt is in the slaves ' lack of freedom. No privilege whatsoever. Things that should be basic rights, even for slaves, were not allowed. Again, this is blatant discrimination being committed against their society 's "mudsill". Because they were carrying out jobs of less sophistication it made people view them as less, which in turn, enabled people to treat them as
