The Lovesong Of J Alfred Prufrock Literary Analysis

In T. S. Eliot’s poem, The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock, the author uses many literary devices to create many feelings of regret. Using metaphors, tone, and imagery, T. S. Eliot creates a feeling that the man in the poem regretted not doing a lot of the things he should have done. In the poem T. S. Eliot uses metaphors to create a feeling that the man in the poem did meaningless things, such as, “measured out my life with coffee spoons” (Line 51). I don’t think he actually measured out his life with coffee spoons. I think that was just his way of saying that he did a lot of meaningless things in his life. I also think he is saying that he regrets doing those purposeless things. He was using a metaphor when he said this, he didn’t actually measure out his life with coffee spoons. The author also used tone to create that feeling of regret by saying things like, “To wonder, “Do I dare?” and “Do I dare?” (Line 38). T. S. Eliot used many other quotes to do the same thing, “wept and fasted, wept and prayed” (Line 81). There are many examples in the poem of the author using tone to create the feeling of regret. “Disturb the universe?/ In a minute there is time/ For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse” (Lines 46, 47, 48). Alfred Prufrock, the author creates a really strong feeling of regret and meaninglessness. T. S. Eliot uses a lot of metaphors, tone phrases, and imagery to create those feelings of regret and meaninglessness. The man in the poem regrets not doing meaningful things while he could do things. At the end of the poem he is questioning whether he had time to do those things before he died. He was thinking about changing his life, but he knew that a minute would reverse the changes he made.
