The Lovely Bones She was murdered at the age of 14 on December 6, 1973. Mr. Harvey had led her to the hutch that he had made her. She went into the hutch to check it out, but then wanted to go home. He wouldn’t let her leave so she tried to escape the hutch but wasn’t able to make it out! He raped her and killed her on the night that she went missing. The strongest symbols that helped develop the story The Lovely Bones are the cornfield, the pompom hat, and the charm bracelet. The first major symbol is the cornfield because that is where Susie was killed. In the beginning of the book, Mr. Harvey shows Susie what he has built. Mr. Harvey convinced her to go inside of the hutch and to check it out. Mr. Harvey says,” I’ve built something back here. Would you like to see? (Sebold 7) Mr. Harvey wants to lead her into the hutch so he can rape and kill her. This quote is important because Susie was led into his trap and she didn’t realize what she was walking into. She got curious and decided to follow her curiosity. Her curiosity led to her being molested and murdered. She was never found after that incident. …show more content…
Harvey used her hat to keep her quiet. In the beginning of the book in chapter 2, Mr. Harvey uses Susie’s pompom hat to gag her while he took control of her. Susie says, “He reached into the pocket of my parka and balled up the hat my mother had made me, smashing it into my mouth” (Sebold 13). The quotation I used is to show that Mr. Harvey is in control of the situation and that Susie cannot escape from Mr. Harvey. He used the pompom hat that her mother made out of love and turned it into something perverted. This quote is important because it shows that Mr. Harvey isn’t going to let her go at all. He is going to keep her until her life is done and over
