A Dream of Fear Did you ever have a dream where you knew you were dreaming and you try to wake yourself up from that dream? Anxiety quickly sets in and you begin to question whether you really are dreaming. Suddenly, you are awake and you carried your anxiety with you. Once you have calmed yourself down, you begin searching for the meaning of your dream. You try to describe your dream to someone close to you, hoping this person will help you discover the meaning of your dream. However, this person is unable to visualize the specifics of your dream and its almost impossible to interpret the dream 's meaning. T. S. Eliot 's “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” is similar to one of these dreams. It is almost impossible to follow the sequence of events in this poem. Like most dreams, the poem travels in time and the scenes are somewhat familiar. Nervousness and anxiety come along in response to the odd statements, strange environments, unanswered questions and countless inferences to time. Yet, the meaning of the dream is distant. Based on the title and other elements of the poem, the “you” in “The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock” is a woman he loves dearly. In order to determine who the “you” is in this poem, it is necessary to examine the character of Mr. Profrock. The title of the poem suggests Prufock is singing a love song.
