“Mom! Mom! What’s her name again?” “Amelia Bedelia, Mag”, she reassured me, providing momentary relief for my frustration as I tried to read the picture book on my own. I would “read” a few pages, narrating my own version of the story and until I forgot the main character’s name. I would stare at the words on the page, in exasperation, wondering why I simply couldn’t remember them. Reading then was a combination of creativity and memorization. Nevertheless, I loved it.
After I really learned how to read, I was even more hooked.
My mom scolded me, “Mag, that’s rude”, but I didn’t understand what I had done to upset her. I was being quiet, minding my own “beeswax” as she often told me to do.
“People are trying to talk to you!” She added. I began to see her point. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to bring my book to the dinner table.
Since reading through dinner was indefinitely banned, I had to find a new time to immerse myself in my …show more content…
The book was no Harry Potter and was practically irrelevant to everyone besides myself. The librarians were confused what book I was actually looking for and if I was sure I had the right name of the series. I was sure and I wasn’t going anywhere until I found that book. One of the librarians in the young adult section had finally had enough with my pestering and she somehow arranged for the one copy to be brought in from Crystal Lake Public Library. I didn’t even know where Crystal Lake was, but I knew it sure as hell wasn’t apart of the Winnetka-Northfield branch. She instructed me to come back in two days, and that she would have the book behind front desk for me. The two days dragged by, but eventually the time had come. I brought home my book with satisfaction, but before I dared to crack it open, I busted into Jack’s
