The excitement of the residents of the Love Canal has not lasted too long. More terrible news ensued. People living far away from the pollution center were beginning to worry about their own safety. In November 1978, more than 200 compounds were found in the landfill site of which about 200 tons contained hazardous dioxin Dioxin [2, 3, 7, and 8 tetrachlorodibenzoparadioxin (TCDD)], a highly toxic carcinogen. The identification of dioxins made the inhabitant extremely panic (Philips et al., 2007). In 1979, tensions between residents and the government continued. This year, the New York state government announced the temporary rehousing 30 families with pregnant women and children. However, more terrible finds and internal information shocked the residents at Love Canal. It revealed that the concentration of dioxin was 100 times higher than the number from the previous reports. The more carcinogens were found in air samples. The risk of developing cancer increased among the residents at Love Canal. At the end of 1979, the New York state government has solemnly announced that they cleaned up all the pollutions. The residents can move back to their own places. However, in May 1980, the anger from the residents was completely ignited by the report from EPA. The report noted that the industrial waste at Love Canal may cause genetic damage.
