Exposition – This concept aids in the introduction of a plot by providing the setting, the characters, and other details that could provide the reader a better understanding of what is going on. “The Lottery Ticket” begins by stating that Ivan is a middle-class man who is satisfied with life and has a wife who bought a lottery ticket and asks him to look at the newspaper to see if they had won.
Rising Action – During this time of the plot, the reader begins to understand the character more and what conflicts these characters are attempting to find a resolution to. Ivan looks to see if the numbers are there. He doesn’t suspect much until he sees that the first few numbers begin to match. He and his wife get excited and begin to dream of what they could use the money for.

The reader is reading as if the story is happening in that instance. It does not always benefit the plot because time is vital to story-telling, for it helps the reader understand the plot and it is easier to follow a story when the reader knows the time of the events and when they are occurring. Therefore, “in medias res” is not always ideal because it could make the plot difficult to comprehend because the reader needs to be able to identify the conflict, climax, and resolution which cannot happen all at once.
