The the theme of loneliness and winning not being everything interferes with significance of relationships with others because it can affect how people get along with each other. This is importantly because it can ruin relationships with other individuals. The theme of loneliness can interfere with your everyday life because it causes people to isolate themselves from their friends and in some cases their family as well. Winning is not everything can also contribute to the theme of loneliness. Sometimes people take it a little too far when it comes to winning. It’s understandable if someone is competitive, but there's a certain limit that it can reach before it gets out of hand.

Shirley Jackson was able to portray this theme into her story by representing the lottery as something people dreaded rather than something they’ve always wanted. “The original paraphernalia for the lottery has been lost long ago...”(26) “Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand...”(33) This quote portrays the theme that winning isn’t everything because as Hutchinson pulls out his name from the others and realizes it’s his, he quickly puts it back. But it’s the lottery? Wouldn’t you want to win? In this village the lottery is the complete opposite as what we see it in today’s day. Winning the lottery in this book was getting stoned to death, but today you win millions of dollars. The book has a different twist to it that is able to really contradict the meaning of a true
