“The Lottery”is a short story written by Shirley Jackson. The story is about a small idyllic town that follows traditions that their ancestors had begun, even when it is not in their best interest. Villagers convene in the square to participate in the discrete yet reasonable lottery which is ran by Mr. Summers. There is black wooden box in the center of the square where each member of the family selects a piece of paper. If a family member draws a black dot in the middle of the piece of paper selected they won the lottery. For one thing the explanation of the word tone is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally revealed through the choice of words, or the viewpoint of a writer on a specific subject. Not every piece of work has the constant tone throughout the story. In “The Lottery” for example the tone has a noticeable shift from a peaceful, normal, everyday kind of tone to a firmly eerie tone that finishes the tale. Moreover the story is peaceful and normal because surely the villagers must believe murder and violence are wrong, for the village sees a swell. The villagers seem normal and peaceful enough too. Yet when Mrs. Hutchinson's 'wins' the lottery, the entire townspeople do not hesitate to turn on her. For instance Mrs. Delacroix tells tessie “Be a good sport” (Jackson 5) and Mrs. Graves added on as well to say “All of us took the same chance” (Jackson 5). Meaning weather they were her friends or not she still had to get stoned and participate in the lottery whether she liked it or didn’t.
