The Lottery By Tessie Hutchinson Analysis

The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson was about a community lost in a tradition that they refused to let go, no matter how violent it was. The tradition was that each year, on June 27th, the people of the small village would gather in the town square and draw a name of a person in the community that would be stoned to death to help with their future crops. The unlucky “winner” of this year was Mrs. Tessie Hutchinson. Tessie Hutchinson was a selfish women who hid her terrible ways behind her title of a house wife and mother and ultimately payed the price of her own abandonment. In the early on the morning of the lottery while everyone was in the square, Tessie was oblivious to the day it was. She was so caught up in her family duties, washing the dishes, she forgot about the lottery. First she was just like the others in her community, going along with the tradition of the lottery as if it was nothing. However, when she is the one it effects we saw her mood change. I see Tessie as a hypocrite because of this. Another fact that infuriated be about Tessie was her lack of care towards her children. In the beginning she acted like she was such a good homemaker and got so caught up in her dishes and it caused her to be late to the lottery. But, if she took care of her duties as a homemaker why was she so quick to offer up her children? A mothers love is supposed to be one of the strongest bonds their is, but Tessie lacked this greatly. When she was announced the “winner” she did not once show any relief that her young children were saved. She was no longer part of a “family” and I believe this was made clear when little Davie was given stones to throw at his own mother. When you abandon your smily they might just abandon you in
