There both boxes essentially that have something in them nobody wants anything to do with. The list of the names in the lottery and then also the child that lays inside the cellar. No one wants to be the one to draw the dot that kills them and no one wants to really have anything to do with the child. Just because some people left there were others that did not care about the child being there. According to Shirley Jackson “ seems like there’s no time at all between lotteries any more”….. “ Seems like we got through with the last one only last week.” (The lottery pg.3) With this statement you can take it either way as in a positive way or in negative way. In The Lottery they are all so selfish in not changing the tradition that they do not care that someone’s lives at stake. They are being selfish and doing what is good for the village. But how could killing someone be benefit the village? How could so many be ok with killing someone? The outcome of the village should be based on all the villagers that a simply apart of the village and how they all can bring something different to the table than someone else. According to Le Guin “One of them may come and kick the child to make it stand up.” ( The Ones That Walk Away From Omelas pg.3) Now that is the most selfish thing again because as people come down and see the child they are abusing him to make themselves feel better about there own lives. The child probably looks at how they are dressed and what they look like and thinks why can I not be apart of that why am I stuck down here. That’s a really selfish thing for people to go down there and just harass the child and make it feel even worse than what it already
