Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" uses a black box as a symbol of tradition to convey an underlying message that when communities do not question tradition it may lead to negative outcomes for individuals in the community. In page 26 line 57 "Mr.Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new black box but no one liked it to upset even as tradition represented b the black box” This evidence reveals that if they change the box the tradition will be upset. The foolishness of blindly following tradition is satirized in Shirley Jackson's “The lottery.” For example, When tessis almost forgot that it was the day of the lottery and later that day gets picked for the murky tradition. This is a big part of the story because that the people thinks it is just a normal day that you have your fate on the line with your family. Another example, that “Old man Warner” has been in the lottery 77 times and still doesn't see a problem in with the crummy tradition. Old man warner even gets mad because people in the north are ending the tradition because they understand the stupidity of the tradition.…

The short story “The Lottery,” written by Shirley Jackson, illustrates to the reader a society that heavily relies on the tradition it was established upon, even though the tradition is barbaric and senseless. Shirley Jackson illustrates to the reader how this barbaric tradition occurs by utilizing a third-person omnificent narrative, which also gives the reader insight into the history of the tradition and how societies understanding of it has changed due to the progression of time. Shirley Jackson also utilizes imagery to display to the reader how the tradition of this society has aged and how its relevance has diminished as time passed. Using these methods of storytelling, and various others, Shirley Jackson highlights how we as a society should be critical when examining the validity of past traditions and customs that we have established.…

Shirley Jackson uses symbolism in this short story by using objects, names, and the setting to tell the meaning of the lottery. The objects in the story represent symbolic meanings to The Lottery. Helen E. Nedbeker states “The present box has been made from pieces of the original (as though it were salvaged somehow) and is now blackened, faded, and stained…

In “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, the black box is a symbol of the town’s adherence to a strong yet poorly understood tradition. Jackson shows the strong attachment to the tradition when describing the current condition of the box. The current box is hardly a remnant of the original and yet, the townspeople refuse to make a new one, even though it is needed. Furthermore, Jackson uses the imagery of the black box to explain how the tradition has lost its potency over time. Finally the author shows the poor understanding of the tradition when the villagers use the character Tessie as a scapegoat to commend their local tradition.…

Murder is something so gruesome it seems now days, but try imagining a group of people or even a small city targeting an innocent woman to not only murder her but stone her to death. That is pretty much the gist of this story. The elusive idea of the story is revealed once the first stone hits Tessie Hutchinson in the head, and then it is made crystal clear that the annual "Lottery" is not such a good thing after all. Although Shirley Jackson 's "The Lottery" is attacking small town America, I believe that this short story is much more complex than that because it also argues the reason for tradition. One of the many ideas of this story is one of random tradition.…

Shirley Jackson’s, “The Lottery” presents a view of human nature and tradition. In my opinion human nature is good, it starts of positive, then becomes corrupted when we start to civilize and acquaint ourselves, which eventually becomes a tradition. Jackson I think makes many points throughout her story that deal with the basics of human nature. As I see it she make four major points in accordance to her views on society and its human nature. The first is the aimless following of tradition, and the idea that if they participate, they will be cleansed and their chance of getting chosen next year is unlikely.…

The timelessness of certain traditional values offer a sense of comfort. In The Lottery, Shirley Jackson uses the shabby black box to symbolize of the resentment society feels towards change (SparkNotes Editors). This is demonstrated by the villager’s refusal to replace the black box, despite the fact that it is old and decrepit. The villagers have used the same black box in the lottery draw for generations. As a result, the black box is described as, “faded, badly splintered and shabbier each year” (Jackson 134).…

Furthermore the theme of tradition can be traced throughout the entire plot of “The Lottery”. “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson closely follows multiple themes. The most prominent being the basic following of tradition itself, and how over time small changes can occur in these traditions. As for “The Lottery” the tradition was a brutal death by stoning of an innocent town member simply because they drew a marked piece of paper. This tradition seems very harmful and pointless as Tessie Hutchinson (protagonist) points out.…

Within the lottery lies another layer of symbolism- the black box used to conduct the ritual. Jackson goes into great description of the box and how the people go to great lengths to preserve but also avoid it and even blantly states the symbolism the box has in relation to the ritual, “Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box,” (290). The multiple layers of symbolism behind this corrupted ceremony all point towards the fear of the townsfolk and the danger behind the…

Superstitious tradition symbolized an important role to the people in this village. Mr. Summers a man that was in charge of the majority of the events in the town, always spoke about making a new black box but never did.
