Analysis of “The Lottery” and “The Cask of Amontillado”
Psychoanalytic theory is based on Freud’s idea that we can realise what does person’s thinks and feels if we look at what he or she perceives in his mind (Psychoanalytic Criticism (1930's-present)). Moreover, it follows that by analysing one of the author’s characters we are really analysing the author itself. We do not need to believe this as a whole. We believe based on experience and on some Psychological theories, that the main characters in writings represent side of personalities. They are the writer’s answers guide into realms of possibility.

To start off, both of these victims were undeserving of their punishment. Tessie Hutchinson, was a woman just trying to get done with a horrendous event, that she believed wasn’t fair. And Fortunato, a wine enthusiast who was being unknowingly led to his death, by a person who he believed was his friend. Both of these victims were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Another similarity between Fortunato and Tessie, is that they were both eager to get to the end. Tessie just wanted the lottery to be over, and Fortunato just wanted to get to see and taste the amontillado. The use of Irony in these two short stories is similar too. Although not the same type of irony, both authors used this writing tool very well. Shirley Jackson used it by creating the idea in the readers mind, that winning “The lottery” was a good thing, when it was actually bad. And Edgar Allen Poe used dramatic irony in “The Cask of the Amontillado” by having the reader know the plans of the narrator (Montresor) to kill Fortunato, while Fortunato had no clue at all.
The differences between the two stories first start off in the time period. Although there is no specific time period given for “The lottery” the clothing mentioned in this short story (jeans and a T-Shirt) is a bit more modern compared to the renaissance time in “The Cask of the Amontillado.” Another difference between the short stories is that the undeserving victim in “The cask of the Amontillado” (Fortunato) is a boy, while the undeserving victim in “The lottery” is a
