When someone undermines the government for the greater good, can they be considered a hero? In Little Brother, a high school senior named, Marcus Yallow, risks his safety in attempt to save his town. He was on the streets after a bombing of the Bay Bridge, then he was taken to a “prison” to be questioned to make sure he wasn’t a terrorist. Marcus arrived home 3 days later and was absolutely furious with Homeland Security and he was going to do something about it. In Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow, I personally think that Marcus is a hero because not many people have done something as brave as going against the government and he just wanted to help the citizens of his city.…

This year the Annual Literacy Festival was titled Strange Bedfellows and was mainly about Politics and Literature. This title was chosen to be the theme this year because of the new upcoming president that will be elected and all of the politics that are taking place right now. All of the participants this year were chosen based off of the fact that they all connect to “poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and have attempted to make sense and art out of political actualities” (Old Dominion University Libraries). The festival took place from Sunday September 25th to Thursday September 29th at different locations on campus. The event that I attended was held at the Baron and Ellie Gordon Art Galleries, I really enjoyed where the event took place because…

Children in The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, play quite a pivotal role in the shaping of the novel as a whole; they allow for a period of travesty to come out seeming much less dramatic and much more so, somehow simultaneously. It is through the struggles these children face, it is through the love they feel, it is through the relationships they hold that exhibit a sense of almost normalcy amidst chaos, which would be a difficult task for any adult to achieve. The author and narrator focus so heavily on the lives of these children and their perspective in which they see the war unfold, making for a much more unique and gratifying read. Although the population of Nazi Germany in the 1940s was facing an array of struggles (scarcity of food,…

Imagine a world where no child has been born for eighteen years and war has been declared, would you fight or would you hide? In Alfonso Cuaron’s film ‘Children of men’ this is the case because he has characters throughout his film combatting against evil. Primarily he shows Theo and Kee (the main characters) combating evil to get to safety which they believe is a Human Project ship called Tomorrow. This film proves that a successful text should show protagonists trying to combat evil to engage interest and emotional aura with the viewers.…

Children all over the world are engaged in a great number of activities classifiable as work. The activities vary from relatively harmless activities like helping parents in their domestic chores, to morally and physically exploiting ones like soldiering and prostitution. If we leave out the former, we are left with what are generally called "economic" activities. Of these economic activities, less than 4 percent of all working children, are estimated to be engaged in what ILO (International Labour Organisation) defines as the "unconditional" worst forms of child labour. The absolute number of children estimated to be engaged in the latter is, however, a stunning 8.4 million.…
