One in every ten americans are addicted to drugs. Addiction is a challenge talked about in many forms of literature. Addiction has crippling effects for not only those who are directly affected by it but also those who are close to the user. Early teaching to people within the novel and addiction to drugs such as soma play a big role in brave New world and Bernard is singled out for his differences and is a rare case of not being addicted to anything in the novel. Brave New World, A nonfiction book by Aldrous Huxley is symbolic of abuse of drugs leading to loss of humanity. Lenina is the crack in the metaphorical mold by understanding “I suppose Epsilons don’t really mind being Epsilons” (Huxley 50). The realisation of the acceptance that they feel is impactful because it shows lenina having a different opinion than everyone else because she doesn 't just dismiss them. Lenina understands that epsilons do not have a choice and she can put herself in to the shoes of them. Stereotyping is an issue that is still dealt with today but in brave new world nobody realises it except for lenina. In Brave new world individuality is nonexistent and is ironic because at face value it seems like everyone is living a perfect life and are all unique. Bernard cares more about people not and does not agree with others that were “Talking about her as though she were a bit of meat.” (Huxley 33). Bernard has feelings for lenina and he is defensive over her and these feelings because he does not want to see her talked about in a bad manner. Drugs are what causes this constant feeling of happiness and when bernard declines them he is not only being drug free but he is declining the feeling of perpetual
