In the “Santa Ana” by Joan Didion, she describes the Los Angeles wind and the effect it has on people. Didion describes the Santa Ana winds as a very unpleasant time that people have to go through. She says, “Los Angeles weather is the weather of catastrophe…” (Didion 47). Her description of the Santa Ana winds is extreme and shocking. Didion says the winds make people depressed and sometimes the winds make people go crazy. The way the Santa Ana winds are described makes me not want to be anywhere near the people that are affected by the winds. Unlike the Santa Ana winds, my hometown, Parkdale, Oregon, has weather and an environment that is much more enjoyable.
In the summer, Parkdale is busier than usual. The environment around Parkdale consists of dense woods, spread out houses, big mountains, hidden creeks, hidden ponds, lakes, green grass, and orchards, a lot of orchards. The summer really makes Parkdale a nice place to be in. In the summer, the temperature will almost always be around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and it can go up to 100. During this time many tourists visit Parkdale with their family to look around, visit the small shops, go to the lake, or hang out. People wear shorts, tank-tops, sun hats, sun glasses, and all the usual summer clothing. In the spring all the naked trees become green and dense one more time. Spring is also a time when I might wake up to the first summer-like day of the year. When that first sunny looking day comes, people put on their summer clothes even though the temperature isn’t very hot. Since a lot of people in Parkdale enjoy outdoor activities, they all start coming outside to enjoy the spring weather. Orchard trees blossom and look like giant bouquets of flowers. Spring in Parkdale is almost treated like summer when it comes
