If the director stretches it too much he ends up having to add things in the movie that weren’t originally in the story. Which is what happened with The Hobbit. Like previously stated, Peter Jackson decided to expand characters’ roles, such as, Thranduil, Legolas, Tauriel, and Bolg. Although this was necessary in order to explain Legolas’s background, it also lead to other things that had to be added to make it fit into the story’s plot and seem natural: Kili’s, Legolas’s and Tauriel’s love
