Improving My Speaking And Writing Skills

Improved Essays
In general I consider myself a B student based on my reading, speaking and listening, and writing skills. In reading by itself I’m a B student, in speaking and listening I’m a D student, and finally in writing I’m a B student. In the future and other essays I plan on improving my skills with more practice and a little more time in these categories, Based on past essays, work and feedback I will be explaining my opinion on my grade.
As a reader, I see myself as a B student rather than an A student. When I’m reading I’m aware of roadblocks that occur, but I don’t use a variety of reading strategies. I usually just a paraphrase and make conclusions because I don’t really know how to annotate very well with the other strategies. For example, In

Another example is paraphrasing the text in my own words from the chapter 2 close reading of Lord of the Flies. I wrote ‘Jack thinks he’s chief” because Jack had started taking charge all of a sudden when Ralph was the actual chief. Moving on, when it comes to analysis, I can explain the main characters and key events, but I don’t really acknowledge the authors’ style choices. In that particular area I really don’t know what to say. I can say it through a psychological lens and find meaning through that, but not through the authors view. For example, in one of the Lord of the Flies close reading I annotated that ‘Jack has gone delusional” because it was at the beginning of the book were he left the fire unattended and wen t of hunting. He was satisfied with the pig’s blood on his hand, through this I didn’t know …show more content…
Before I start writing the draft of an essay, I make a plan on how will I proceed. And usually I’ll set a few hours separately just to work on that paper or assignment. I start of writing on paper for a few hours then I start typing it. The other thing I do in my writing process is follow feedback from my peers and instructor. The feedback I mostly look at is the feedback on my grammar and sentence structure because that area is where I’m the weakest at. For example, in my Fahrenheit essay I received feedback on my organization and sentence variety being weak. The essay after that I fixed the sentence variety and improved, but I still was weak on the organization part of my essay. In the same way when it comes to claims, I support it with numerous quotes and text references, but my claims are weak and so are my elaborations. Such as when I was doing my outline for Lord of the Flies essay, I was having a hard time figuring out my claims because I was very lost and I didn’t know how to make a strong that related to the prompt. For my elaborations, I do explain the importance of my evidence, but it’s confusing because I don’t know how to explain it on paper and when I do its confusing. And then I get confused on whether I should go more in depth or just leave it the way it is. In addition when I take note of the authors’ style, I only take note of diction and details because I understand those concepts more. I

The exact details help you imagine things the way the author thought of it; when used correctly, it can be a great tool. For example, on page 169, it reads, “They rode together, they two alone, by the same road as once before, and even more companionable than them. They went without haste, unwinding the longer way back, the way fitter for horses, the way they had first approached the grange.” Another thing you see from that quote is the old language the entire book is written in. The entire book is written as it would have been read in the 1200’s.…

The text “Beyond the Yellow Highlighter: Teaching Annotation Skills to Improve Reading Comprehension” written by Carol Porter-O’Donnell explains the importance of annotating readings in order to gain a deeper understanding. Most students will read the surface of a passage, without following up with questions or a discussion. Using annotations will benefit the student by teaching them how to critically think and become more active readers. By annotating the readers will take breaks to write down their thoughts, questions, or explaining what they have read so far. Doing this will help the students develop better writing skills and make reading higher level texts easier to read.…

Thomas Foster, an English professor, desired to write a book that delivered explanations for what the professor thinks when he or she reads versus that which a student brings to mind in regards to connections made when reading a work of literature. From this desire Foster wrote “How to Read Like A Professor.” In each chapter, Foster describes specific tools and strategies authors have used in the past and continue to put into practice. These strategies are employed by writers as a means to connect to the mind of a reader to a deeper thought or idea related to the context. These hidden messages, according to Foster, are instinctively palpable to the Professor’s eye; but to the eye of one who has not dedicated their life to the study of literature,…

Rhetorical Reading Strategies Today’s students tend to forget about their reading assignments and tend to give up, I believe that if we educated younger students on how we read, in later years they’ll develop a keen sense for reading. The problem with reading is that nobody remembers what or why their reading, we don’t understand the concept of trying to comprehend a new, more difficult text. A recent article, titled “Rhetorical Strategies and the Construction of Reading” has been brought to the light to help understand the concepts and levels of reading. Authors of this article, Christina Haas and Linda Flowers have created a theory about reading strategies.…

In chapter one of “Patterns for College Writing” Mrs. Kirszner discusses how to be a critical reader. One of the key things discussed in this chapter is how to annotate a text. It shows a few specific examples, encouraging students to develop skills in annotation. Within these examples, I found several different steps that I had never heard of before. Along with these steps, I also discovered a few that I had already involved in my studying.…

As a writer, I am quite sure of myself. I feel that English 101 was a large step for me in improving and building my skills. Writing is a particular strength of mine, although I do have some trouble when it comes to open-ended prompts. I am able to use words effectively to construct an argument, although I would consider myself still inexperienced with the writing process. I was not required to write much throughout high school and what I did write was formulaic and lacking substance.…

Shivam 1 Shivam Gupta Professor Keith MacDonald Composition 1 20 October 2017 Read Like a Writer In Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer” he explains how one can become a better reader simply by trying to understand the article from the point of view of the writer, by analyzing every word, sentence or paragraph with one question in mind, "what effect did the writer intend to have with these words?". I believe it is important for us to have this skill because it gives us a better insight into what we are reading, it helps us understand on a deeper level exactly what the article is trying to tell us and in response, this teaches us better techniques and skills to become better writers. Using guidelines set by Bunn in his article, I will illustrate…

Do not just read the text; talk back to it by asking yourself questions and truly taking something out of the reading. By reading in this critical manner not only does this tactic re-enforce what you have just read but, furthermore you’ll read in a more efficient manner versus reading in the typical sense due to the fact that asking these question and scrutinizing every detail means you have already deciphered the rhetorical meaning of this article, without having to double back and re-read to comprehend the meaning in its…

After reviewing my ideas and deciding exactly what the best approach would be to address the given prompt, I write a rough draft, then I start typing my final copy. As I am typing my final draft I revise sentences, correct spelling and grammar, and occasionally add or take away a sentence. Once my essay is completely written, I use the spelling and grammar check and fix mistakes that it may find. I then print my essay out and let a couple people read it and fix any mistakes they find. I ask them for suggestions on how to combine sentences and have a better variety of sentences.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…
