In general I consider myself a B student based on my reading, speaking and listening, and writing skills. In reading by itself I’m a B student, in speaking and listening I’m a D student, and finally in writing I’m a B student. In the future and other essays I plan on improving my skills with more practice and a little more time in these categories, Based on past essays, work and feedback I will be explaining my opinion on my grade.
As a reader, I see myself as a B student rather than an A student. When I’m reading I’m aware of roadblocks that occur, but I don’t use a variety of reading strategies. Another example is paraphrasing the text in my own words from the chapter 2 close reading of Lord of the Flies. I wrote ‘Jack thinks he’s chief” because Jack had started taking charge all of a sudden when Ralph was the actual chief. Moving on, when it comes to analysis, I can explain the main characters and key events, but I don’t really acknowledge the authors’ style choices. In that particular area I really don’t know what to say. I can say it through a psychological lens and find meaning through that, but not through the authors view. For example, in one of the Lord of the Flies close reading I annotated that ‘Jack has gone delusional” because it was at the beginning of the book were he left the fire unattended and wen t of hunting. Before I start writing the draft of an essay, I make a plan on how will I proceed. And usually I’ll set a few hours separately just to work on that paper or assignment. I start of writing on paper for a few hours then I start typing it. The other thing I do in my writing process is follow feedback from my peers and instructor. The feedback I mostly look at is the feedback on my grammar and sentence structure because that area is where I’m the weakest at. For example, in my Fahrenheit essay I received feedback on my organization and sentence variety being weak. The essay after that I fixed the sentence variety and improved, but I still was weak on the organization part of my essay. In the same way when it comes to claims, I support it with numerous quotes and text references, but my claims are weak and so are my elaborations. Such as when I was doing my outline for Lord of the Flies essay, I was having a hard time figuring out my claims because I was very lost and I didn’t know how to make a strong that related to the prompt. For my elaborations, I do explain the importance of my evidence, but it’s confusing because I don’t know how to explain it on paper and when I do its confusing. And then I get confused on whether I should go more in depth or just leave it the way it is. In addition when I take note of the authors’ style, I only take note of diction and details because I understand those concepts more. I
