Sociology is used and related to many different shows, books, and movies, but I’m specifically going to be writing about how sociology is related to the book The Lord of the Flies by William Golding. This novel is taken place during World War II, when a plane crashes on a remote island trying to leave Britain for safety, filled with a small group of schoolboys that become the only survivors. The boys’ struggle to find a way of existing in a community with no rules. Who is the leader? What are the rules? Who has the power and authority? One can imagine that it’s going to be hard for these children to instill and maintain social order, but they are sure going to try. When the boys crashed onto an island Piggy realized they needed guidance, food and water. The conversation between Ralph and Piggy clearly shows Piggy’s demand for social order (Henslin, 2001)

The struggle comes from deviant behavior (Henslin, 2011) taking place among the boys which will shift the norms that were originally in place. Deviance is first foreshadowed when the younger boys find a bloody pig. This shows the battle between good and evil as the group willing to sustain to their originally norms and the group willing to deviate from the norm which will show the conflict theory, or the result when groups engage in fierce competition for resources (Henslin, 2001). Ralph creates rules and norms pertaining to where to go to the washroom, helping build huts, and keeping the fire going, which are falling apart because of Jack. Jack starts to spread fear around in the boys’ heads about a beast that is walking on the island so that he earns the trust of all of the boys in order to gain more power, but when all that power leads the boys to only care for hunting like Jack, the fire goes out with ships passing which symbolized their loss of
