Piggy tells Jack, "You got your small fire all right" (210).” The fire ultimately becomes a symbol of destruction and rescue. This is extremely ironic due to Jack lighting the forest on fire to catch Ralph, the boys got rescued by a naval cruiser and safely leaves the island. Because of lighting a massive fire Jack literally saves the boys’ lives whilst trying to kill one of their own. The island is just a microcosm of the real world.…

This leads the boys who denied Ralph’s leadership and trust, to become a tribe of savages that were against Ralph’s rulings. The boys attempt to attack Ralph, and to scare him out from hiding by creating a large distorted forest fire. Unknowingly, the fire gives off large heaps of smoke, alerting a nearby British ship. This causes the boys to be saved and rescued from the island where they had crash landed. I feel happy yet dazzled by how the story ended.…

Ralph focused on fire and hope while most of the other boys only cared about having fun. Without surveillance from the adults, it is extremely easy and tempting to have fun and forget the most important task, keep a signal fire going. Ralph and Piggy kept reminding the boys about the importance of the fire and the hope of rescue that comes along with its smoke. Even when Jack and the rest of the tribe had completely turned away from civilization, Ralph still led Piggy and Samneric to focus on this single most important fire on the island. When the boys were starting to lose hope in getting rescued and saw no purpose in the fire, Ralph explained the reasons clearly, repeating it often to keep the group hopeful for rescue.…

Throughout Golding's writing, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph and Jack are seen as strong individual leaders. Jack is the boy to follow in physical aspects while Ralph was followed for great ideas and always seen as someone being there for all the types of boys on the island. Ralph had the common sense and education he would need in order to figure out the main problem on the island. Jack had common sense as in hunting and being physical for areas in which some of the boys needed. As both boys grow in the story, Jack’s innocence goes downhill.…

In section 5 of the allegory “The Lord of the Flies”, the symbol of civilization has been shattered near the end of chapter 10 and the majority of the boys have fully descended into savagery. In addition, the position of “chief” has been transferred for Jack. This is evident as Jack and Ralph argues over who claims the title of “chief in Chapter 9. Jack uses the meat given to the boys as a strategy to listen to him. Ralph says “I’m Chief, because you chose me.…

Piggy, one of the main characters, represents intelligence and obedience. Jack, another main character, suggests the character of savagery. Ralph, our third main character of the book, signifies civilization in our society. Main symbols that are significant to the story are the Conch (material that grants the right to speak to whoever holds it), the mask(s) Jack’s tribe wears, and the fire or signal fire that has put the boys in danger before. William Golding uses symbolism in this story because it gives deeper meaning to the situation, well details the characters and their inconveniences, and signifies certain events in the book.…

When a group of boys are stranded on a deserted island with no adults, the boys become irritated with each other and start to become savages, and the items they hold dear turn into chaos as the boys turn into savages that know only destruction and death. Immediately, Piggy and Ralph, the first two boys that are introduced, find the conch in the water and use it to gather all the boys together, and the conch becomes vital for the boys to keep order and not turn into savages. As the chief of the boys’ civilization, Ralph recommends that the boys make a fire so that boats passing by can see the island and rescue them. The boys want to get off the island immediately after arrival, so Ralph recommends at the meetings that they talk about issues at, to use fire to create smoke so that boats would notice. When the boys first made the fire with Piggy’s glasses, they did not understand how much power it has and the flames burned a part of the island, which resulted in the death of the boy with a mulberry birthmark.…

We can see that Golding uses symbolism to prove the theme that we can trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature, and that we are all capable of becoming a Nazis. We can see this because he makes the characters start off nice and innocent, but as the story develops and starts going to the climax we see that the boys start changing and they become savage they start not to care about the others. Golding believes that we are all capable of becoming Nazis and uses symbolism such as savagery in Lord of the flies. Some examples he used to portray his theme was to use people and some symbols.…
