Long ago there was a great vast paradise where all insects lived. Among these insects were the worms, the most easily frightened, and the most unwilling to try any new things out of all the insects; some may even say that these worms suffered from Neophobia. Everyday for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the worms ate dirt. However they did not eat it happily; it was often that they would complain and say,
“I am tired of eating dirt. It’s disgusting.”
To which the older much wiser worms would say, “Dirt is what we have been eating for generations, and for good reason.Although dirt is not the most delicious source of food, it is the only food that we know of that is not poisoned.”
But within this colony of worms was one named Fruit. He was unlike the other worms. He desired to try, and explore new things. Fruit was the outcast of the colony, and he would often be shunned for: exploring tunnels that weren’t dug by worms, going to the surface when is was not raining, etc. In other words, Fruit was always curious and willing to try new things.

The plant part I chose to observe was an acorn. Although I was uncertain about what I was supposed to find, I took mental notes of the acorn and its location. The acorn, light brown in color, wearing a rigid little dark brown cap, had just fallen off a tree by the Agriculture Sciences building. It seemed abandoned in a sense, just left to lie on the concrete, among dead decaying leaves, and other fallen acorns. It looked as if it had been left to die.…

It goes on to say that, “the last apple aged in the fruit bowl, untouched. The skimmed milk soured in the fridge, unsupped”. The ironic use of foods that would already be considered slimming and healthy in this context emphasises the extent of her diet. The use of an apple is particularly significant as it has biblical connotations, particularly, a connection with the story of Adam and Eve which could also be a reference to femininity. There are also associations between apples and temptation.…

The two article I chose to review from Science and Children are “Take a Leaf from Our Book” by Betty Fowler and “The Poetry of Plant” by Emily Morgan and Karen Ansberry. Both articles demonstrated how to incorporate literature, poetry, and science in order to teach students about plants through hands-on activities. A piece of literature can be significant tool for teaching and learning about science. However, it takes more than just reading about a topic to be considered “doing science”.…

During a series of ecological disasters including an ice age and a period of extensive solar radiation, the tardigrade, one of nature’s “extremophiles”, was able to evolve physically to the extent where the microscopic organism can decrease its metabolism to a miniscule amount making it able to survive whatever conditions it faces. As it is unknown to how the tardigrade was able to evolve to that extent, a plausible answer is contingency, a theory that evolution sometimes occurs by chance. Lastly, the tardigrade parallels the idea of the “Posthuman” as its ability to survive is far greater than the human’s ability to survive, making the tardigrade a model for the advancement of human physical evolution. Just because humans cannot communicate…

The first aspect that stood out to me while reading The Education of Little Tree by Forrest Carter was when the little tree’s grandpa explained to him the significance of life cycle. “It is the Way. Tal-con caught the slow and so the slow will raise no children who are also slow. Tal-con eats a thousand ground rats who eats the eggs of the quail-both the quick and the slow eggs- and so Tal-con lives by the way” (9) was what his grandfather said to explain little tree about how life cycle worked. The stronger ate the weaker, while the weaker depends on other thing and the other thing depends on the stronger thing- it is the circle of life and it is exactly what an ecosystem mean.…

Illustration: Imagine if you will that you’re driving down a country gravel road on a lazy, sunny autumn afternoon. As you drive down this road you notice there are two fruit orchards one on each side of the road. You become curious as to the type of fruit on the trees and if you can pick it or have to buy a prearranged set amount like a peck or bushel. Without really thinking about it you decided to turn down the drive way of one of the two orchards, dust is flying from your car as it rambles down the driveway and from your seat the trees look filled with ripe apples – your mouth starts to water. After coming to a stop and talking to an employee of the orchard you move towards a peck of the ripest/largest Jonathan apples you’ve ever seen and…

It seems as if the boy had forgotten all about the insects he had captured and placed in his closet to die. It seems as if he thought just because he had the insects close to him he didn’t have to be sad that he was unable to go outside to be with them. He didn’t understand that it was hard for them to survive without the proper elements in their environment. It was early December when he entered his closet and acknowledged the fish bowl for the first time since he has placed it there. He noticed there was no movement going on and it was emptier than the last time he remembered seeing it.…
