The new generation of Israelites is about to go into the promise land after wandering through the desert for forty years. The book of Deuteronomy, the second law, is a speech from Moses to the Israelites before they enter into the promise land. The book is divided up into three sections. The first part of Moses speech is highlighting the past experience of the Israelites, the second part is the book is God’s laws and commands, and the third section is about the future exile from the promise land.

The eternal gifts are drawing near to God in holiness to God. Blessings from God are intimate and special, not as the world sees a blessing as getting what they want, health, a new car, and more. Intimacy with Jesus is the most wonderful blessing where nothing else matters. Curses are given through disobedience, they are miserable. “The Lord will strike you with the boils of Egypt, with tumors, with the scab, and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed.” Today I think it is more difficult to believe that God will do this to His people. Deuteronomy 28:1 is the verse that can sum up the theme of obedience, “If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.” Obedience is stressed in the first commandment love the Lord your God with all your heart soul, and strength. This is the way, God gives us the means to love Him, obedience. Obedience is the only way to be with God, and obedience to God is impossible. The second law tells the story that obedience is not attainable and perhaps, this is a story of the longing of the need the Israelite have to be whole, holy and loved by God. Obedience is essential for communion with God. Many times in the book of Deuteronomy God stresses to “fear not”. Fear is what causes disobedience, the opposite of loving God. It is a gift to know that fear comes with the price of turning away from God. To recognize fear in myself is to know that I cannot love God
