The long walk was endured my Native American in 1860’s after they were release from Fort Sumner. One of many painting is located around New Mexico but one particular painting is located on Third and Hill in Gallup, NM. Richard K. Yazzie is a local artist that collaborate with the City of Gallup create this painting. The painting is to remember the suffering that Native American have experienced. There is four part to this painting and each represent the season during the year; spring, summer, fall, and winter. The painting that was more appealing to me was the last two murals.
The mural is a blue sky that is spotted with a huge cloudy overlooking the Native American women and the young boy; beside them are solider that are escorting the Native people. The painting has a variety of abstract starting with the goats to the solider escorting the people to Fort Sumner and the man on the horse looking over his shoulder. I think the artist use the goat to represent the food that was used to feed the people. The other side of the mural is a soldier escorting the Native American to Fort Sumner. Next to that, is a man sitting on his horse looking over his shoulder. I believe he is looking back at how far he has come and watching his people as they walk. Toward the middle of the mural is a Native

This image appears to be depict the Massacre of Cholula from the perspective of the Tlaxcaltecas. We see that most of the Cholula people were easily killed and dismembered by the powerful Spanish warriors in their metal armor. The artist represent the Spanish forces and what appears to be a few Tlaxcalteca soldiers as valiant heros conquering a weaker undeserving people. The Indian at the far right appears to be jumping of the pyramid as if to commit suicide. The portrayal of the Cholula committing suicide supports the idea that they were weak cowards and also takes some of the blame off the Tlaxcalteca for the ultimate destruction of Cholula.…

This image also represents the difficult journey they will endure including droughts and starvation. The Indians had to endure the Trail of Tears if they wanted to be left alone and survive as a nation. The Cherokees were also treated badly during their journey because they would be treated like prisoners with shackles and even got shackled to their own children, which if they died they had to carry them until their next stop. The Cherokees also had to endure concentration camps during their journey and were shoved into closed quarters where disease spread killing…

In this exceedingly powerful painting, “Figures in a Landscape” painted in 1972 by Sidney Goodman, a child, woman, and man are in what looks to be a park because of the sandbox and blue and red swing set. In the background the mountains are bright and happy with houses surrounded by many tall green trees. On the right side of the painting is a huge dark gloomy cloud like when a murder is about to occur in a horror movie. The figures look like something is going on in their mind, maybe they are unhappy with each other or something is really upsetting them. When I see this painting I feel as if the figures are in there own world not aware of their surroundings.…

In addition to seeing the natives as inferior, they were also seen as incapable of taking care of the land as they had not developed it which was a part of the manifest destiny to develop the land. The move to Basque Redondo, however, began with General Carleton who “believed a military campaign against the Navajo’s was necessary,” in an attempt to maintain the hegemony of the white settlers.…
