Substantial basically involves that the effect of a disability is neither minor nor serious, the effect do not have to be majorly severe. The long term effect means the effect of the impairment and whether it is likely to last for a long time. The case best reflecting this is the case of Mowat-Brown v University of Surrey (2002). In this case Dr Mowat Brown was a university lecture and had been working there since 1981. In 1995 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. After being diagnosed he was offered a contract for only 20 per cent of a full time contract. He refuses and brought a claim for discrimination and unfair dismissal.
