Biases in the Medical Field Throughout time, biases have been prevalent in society. Biases are partial preferences that people hold that prevents objectivity. These innate ideas that individuals have can hinder their thinking and lead them to make a wrong decision.1 These biases are seen in several spheres of life. Two that I will discuss are social and individual.…

For years now, people have tried to be more “politically correct” in everything they say or do. “Political correctness,” I have observed does not only pose problems for those in the majority but for the minorities as well. While on the surface this seems to be just a way of being considerate and kind to fellow human beings, I believe it is actually hurting society as a whole. When majority members cannot speak candidly, members of under-represented groups also suffer. What it results in is that no one, even the minorities it tries to protect, can discuss their concerns about fairness and fears without falling into the negative stereotypes.…
Stereotypes are used all the time in modern television shows. One of the first shows that comes to mind is The Office, in this show, almost every scene creates humor from making fun of stereotypes or exaggerating different stereotypes. The Office uses many different gender stereotypes including men being insensitive, the men being in charge, and more. This show confirms almost all of these stereotypical views of men, and even exaggerates it. One of the more typical stereotypes that has been developed over time is the job positions that are held by men.…
How many female stereotypes have you heard of? How about their role in the workplace? The Office, an American sitcom, has a few. There’s the extremely driven woman in authority with a heart of ice and no personal life; everyone fears her, but in reality, she is an emotional mess. Or the passive, kind, maternal, reliable worker who everyone loves and never challenges authority to success.…
How Does Misogyny Affect Women of Color in the American Workplace? The factors of race and sex have become detrimental in determining the status of women of color in the United States for they have been deemed a minority group. Women of color have experienced a history of oppression based on their race and gender, as depicted in their exclusion in early feminist movements. During World War II, propaganda like the image of Rosie the Riveter spread with the caption “We Can Do It” to inspire women to enter the workforce.…
Hi Dawn, I agree that cognitive dissonance can be positive or negative depending on how it is handled. I love your positive attitude but confused at the same time about the situation of doing your work and incorporating your supervisor work also. I can see that being challenging because it is a lot but you prioritize and made it work for the good of both. This is what makes a healthy work environment when you are able to help one another and work together as a team. We may question ourselves about doing certain things on a job but you never know the great award that lies a head therefore it is always good to try and keep a positive attitude.…
Stereotypes are another one of society’s ways to categorise and portray particular groups of people to the public. Having these set perceptions of people can regularly cause bias or prejudice towards those who are in the perceived category, which in turn impacts how we communicate with the individual or group. One of the most commonly experienced stereotypes in daily life is how each gender is expected to behave. If a social care worker was to accept this stereotype it could cause them to communicate contradictorily with their service user based on whether they are male or female.…

Fallacies in Ads: Everyone is Doing It! Fallacies are common errors in reasoning (Weber and Brizee). We see ads on T.V., in newspapers, magazines and we even hear them on the radio. When we see or listen to these ads, we always take what they say about the product to be true and want the product being advertised to us.…
When transitioning from the education world into the world of employment and being an adult, there are several things that you can do to advance yourself and make yourself stand out among your contemporaries. However, there are also things you can do to disqualify yourself, and one of those things is having inappropriate content on your social media account. To ensure your best chances at success in the professional world, you should seriously consider whether your social media accounts display the professional image you wish to portray to potential employers, and if not you should take steps to rectify that. When a company makes the decision on hiring a new employee, they are making a serious investment in the individual, and as such, want…
Stereotypes and Prejudices Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, “Justice will no be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are”. Discrimination based on gender, race, and age continue to haunt American society. Discrimination is most often caused by a stereotype, general impression, and prejudice, an unjustified or incorrect attitude about a group of people” (Bojanic & Nedic, 2015, p.487). Investigating these three areas, in terms of stereotypes and prejudices, suggests these forces will continue, and become more prevalent in the future.…
Informal fallacies appeal to the ignorance of an inadequately supported argument and can be observed in everyday scenarios. Although many are incognizant of their effect on communication, being aware of the format of an argument can aid an individual in reaching their desired conclusion to any situation they are encountered with. When an argument is presented with limited alternatives, the omission of other choices provides the argument with a false dilemma causing the arguer in the discussion to be limited in their response. If an argument is approached with a false dilemma, the arguer is guiding the defendant to respond in the way that best supports his desired outcome. By limiting the freedom to explore other alternatives, the defendant is left to constitute a response that may not be in their best interest.…
1. Red Herring is a “fallacy in which a deliberate distraction is used in an attempt to veer the listener away from the real question at hand.” I always notice this fallacy whenever I go to the mall and most of it is based between the parent and kids. The mom or dad tries to diver their kid’s attention.…
