The Locutions In The Translation Of Sefer Yetsirah

Decent Essays
The locutions in the translation of Sefer yetsirah is gnomic, a contrast from the narrative style of a creation story such as Genesis. I am unsure if this is because Hebrew (source language) is more compact than English (target language). Nonetheless, succinctness can lead to readers having to fill in the blanks, leading to different interpretations. For instance, Kaplan’s and EB’s versions, differ in length, word choice, and order of principles. In Kaplan’s, the east and west seals are respectively HYV and HVY, compared to EB's HVY and HYV. According to scholarly analysis, "HVY" means "be thou" (the imperative of “to be”) and HYV is the infinitive "to be". An imperative implies control, whereas the infinitive has greater possibilities. Although, novels tell stories that are not true, they can teach valuable lessons in life. In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, there is insight into how the characters struggle to find their way while holding on to their personal dreams. Similiarly, in the article, “A Duty to Family, Heritage, and Country” by Ying Ying Yu, the author informs the reader of how Chinese students are held to very high standards, and there is only one dream, and that is to be successful in the eyes of their family and country. Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men and the article by Ying Ying Yu both demonstrate how one measures success by his or her own actions and consequences.…

The third item to notice about Micaiah is his response (22:15-28). After Micaiah swears to only speak what the Lord speaks, Ahab asks him whether or not the Lord supports his plan against Ramoth Gilead. Micaiah initially replies in the same way as the other prophets, but Ahab is skeptical (22:15). As we mentioned earlier, Ahab’s skepticism stemmed from Micaiah’s reputation. Because of this, he sarcastically asks Micaiah how many times he must make Micaiah swear to tell nothing but the truth (22:16).…

In "words are birds" Francisco X. Alarcón uses many metaphors comparing words to birds to suggest that words, although many and vastly different, all fall under one category and unite us all. The poem begins by giving the reader an overview of how words and birds are related: "words / are birds / that arrive / with books / and spring" (1-5). The correlation between words and books is obvious, as they are often put together, but the author is comparing words to spring as well to show that we use words from basically birth, and the line "and spring" brings to mind ideas of birth and renewal. This is just one example of how we all speak different kinds of words, but they all fall under the category that is "words", just like we all talk, or babble from birth, even if it is in different languages.…

Reverence Reverence by Paul Woodruff is a study on how people, as a whole, view and display their reverence, or lack there of. Woodruff’s initial claim addressing the foundation of reverence is that “Reverence is the capacity to have feelings of awe, respect and shame when these things are the right feelings to have” (pg 6). Reverence is fundamental awareness that needs to be developed and thus he considers it a virtue. He goes into this main point extensively, making it sound as though reverence is the end and these feelings described are just means to achieve that end. So if every feeling that one develops over time is just a way of knowing you have a certain capacity, would the end not be understanding human limitation, or even capability, instead of merely achieving reverence?…

Stories such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin, “The Hunters of Men”, and “Civil Disobedience” all have a connection with the fight to gain civil rights and equality. Much of that still carries on into the 21st century we live in today. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a woman takes matters into her own hands in order to save her child, showing her strength and bravery that many women in today's time possess as well. “The Hunters of Men”, a short story written by John Greenleaf Whittier, is considered to be a public attack on slave hunters. The public attacks against their government and the way people were treated didn't stop there, in “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau, Thoreau made sure to show that the people had more power over the government than they thought.…

To Kill a Mockingbird - “Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This passage was a major part of the story because of the symbolism that has now been revealed. The Mockingbird is a harmless and pure hearted animal, which in this story symbolizes Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. I chose this passage because of the strong meaning behind it.…

In Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “A Psalm of Life”, he expresses two key values: to be zealous about living and to appreciate life in its entirety. From the start of the poem, Longfellow contends that “life is but an empty dream!” and that it is not a fantasy, far-fetched, and difficult to create into a good reality. He believes “the soul is dead that slumbers”, because those souls have lost the motivation for life as they think “the grave is its [ultimate] goal”. I agree with Longfellow with this value, because if a person doesn’t have a passion to live, then he/she won’t have the will to accomplish anything. The passion serves as the hero of a person’s life, and without that passion we will be “like, dumb, driven cattle” who don’t have…
