It probably took a long time for Octavie to receive the letter and the locket from the priest who had found it. The battle that Edmond was in took place during the cold, harsh winter. When Octavie reads the letter by her window and when she and Judge Pellier were riding through the countryside it was late spring or summer. This shows that several months had passed.
Octavie had been in mourning since she received the locket and letter and refuses to enjoy the beauty of life around her. She is determined to become an old spinster and never remarry. During the ride through the countryside, on the way to Judge Pellier’s home, he asked Octavie to remove her veil and never wear it again. He talked about the beautiful day and miracles. Judge Pellier said that it was the kind of day that maybe God would give back those that had died. Judge Pellier appears to be trying to comfort Octavie and help to ease her pain.
To the reader it would seem that Edmond is dead as he was wearing the locket before he went into battle and Octavie had been mourning his loss for many months. It is a surprise to find out that Edmond is really alive and that the locket had been stolen from him while he slept that night before the
