Set in the early 1970s, Ma Jianling and Luo Min, two teenage friends, are required to go to a hidden mountain village to be re-educated because of China’s Cultural Revolution.
Luo ends up falling in love with a girl referred to as the Little Seamstress. The Little Seamstress is very interested by the Western culture; the village chief believes it is inadequately Maoist. The trio read some hidden European Literature that opens up her mind and beliefs. This film was released in 2002, it is based on a semiautobiographical novel.
In the scene I really liked, the boys go to visit a teenager who goes by Four-Eyes. They have been told by the little seamstress that he has a suitcase full of banned books. When they arrive, Four-Eyes is pulling a cow through muddy water. The cow knocks his glasses into the water and Four-Eyes is blinded. Ma and Luo run into the water to help find Four-Eyes’ glasses. This continues as he pulls the cow along, till the cow’s tail swings and knocks Four-Eyes’ glasses off. Four Eyes is very enraged by this. Ma and Luo run over to help find the glasses for him. While they find the glasses, in a phase of rage Four-Eyes appears to stab the cow. The cow runs in fright and Four-Eyes chases after it. Ma and Lou find the glasses and call Four-Eyes back over. He thanks the two boys for finding his glasses and explains how blind he is without them. The boys then tell him the reason they came to visit him by saying, “We came to see you. We want to borrow your books.” Four-eyes responds “What books?” To which the two boys respond “Come on! Did you forget? The ones your father put in your leather suitcase.” Four-eyes informs them saying “I threw it away a long time ago.” The boys are shaken with unbelief saying “Why’d you do that? You’re lying.” Four-eyes invites them to search his home in order to clear the air. The scene ends with the mail man
