The article, “Teens Against Hitler”, by Lauren Tarshis, describes the hardships of Ben Kamm, a Jewish boy, and his family, who like millions of other Jews, perished at the hands of the Nazis during WWII. He and his family managed to survive for a couple of months in the Warsaw Ghetto with a little help from family and friends. Ben had joined the partisans in hope of helping himself, his family, and other Jews. Though he lived through a horrific time he showed courage in a situation where others would have run in fear.…

While I was reading the touching and true story of the life of Ishmael Beah, a child soldier in the Sierra Leonean war, I was able to understand how much hope Ishmael had in order to survive. Each and every day, Ishmael believed in the idea of a better future for himself and his friends. Without this strong belief, Ishmael wouldn’t have had the strong resolve to survive and to never give up on life. Basically, one significant message of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah is to never give up on hope and to believe that there will always be a better future in life. One key passage in the novel is “When I was very little, my father used to say, ‘If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen.…

I agree with Jeannie that success or failure depends on how an individual acts upon a situation. If an individual acts negatively, they will have a negative result. If an individual act positively, they will have a positive result. Also, I agree that in order to succeed, an individual must be able to adapt and bounce back from an unpleasant situation or failure. In order for someone to be successful, they must first experience failure so that they will learn from their experience as well grow as an individual.…

“It is by doing what we think we cannot do and overcoming what we think we cannot overcome that we realize just how strong we really are. ”-Anonymous. This quote reminds me of Há in “Inside Out & Back Again” by Thanhha Lai and Zlata from “Zlata’s Diary” by Zlata Filipovic. Há and Zlata are both wartime children who have struggled and fought through terrible times. After watching the “Death Crawl” directed by Alex Kendrick I think that it shows a very important statement of overcoming obstacles in 3 ways, Motivation, Hard work, and believing in yourself. First of all overcoming obstacles will have to include motivation. In the scene the “Death Crawl” from Facing Giants Brock has to do the death crawl and wants to stop but that is what his head said not his body so he keeps on going all the way. The coach said to Brock “Keep going Brock I know you can do it push yourself!”…

The internees also showed great creativity in the actions they took to overcome the lack of resources in the camp. The internees were able to overcome the adversity presented to them by the camp by working around what supplies they had. Many women would wake up early and use buckets to get hot water for laundry; all internees would race everywhere from the mess hall to the showers. Many internees, especially Uchida, contacted friends outside the camp to give them supplies to help out. In Uchida’s memoir the reader is given a clear image of what the internees went through and how they survived the camp; how the internees were able to use their severely limited supplies intelligently to maintain decent living conditions, and how the internees had to fight for the resources…

20 May, 2016 Mettle Theodore Roosevelt said, "Life brings sorrows and joys alike. It is what a man does with them - not what they do to him - that is the true test of his mettle". It is the ability to cope with hard times and get through them without having a major melt down. I think it is hard for people to stay strong through tough situations, but I believe that is why not many people show mettle because it is so difficult.…

The Wars Robert Ross is in a predicament that showcased the epitome of juxtaposition in this particular novel. Robert a being of gentle and compassionate spirit is thrust into a chaos ridden world, that most would not be able to make sense of let alone survive as long as he did. The protagonist is forced to participate in acts that are so wildly in opposition to his gentle and caring nature. Roberts’s deep reverence for all living things is at the core of who he is as a person. Under these circumstances, it is reasonable to infer any man would become unraveled and Robert was no exception.…
