Improved Essays
In the show, The Little House on the Prairie, Laura was spanked light heartedly. While, the spanking in the film was light hearted the spanking that happens today is not. It has been a controversial in the media about if parents should spank their children or not. Parents should not spank their children because it causes disorders, it’s ineffective and it’s inappropriate. Many parents agree after doing research about child punishments.
First of all, Spanking tends to cause disorders like drug and alcohol abuse. In a study, by Health Watch, “People ages 15 to 64 who were slapped or spanked occasionally had developed a alcohol, drug abuse or anxiety disorder. With that 13 percent had an alcohol problem, and 17 percent developed drug abuse or anxiety disorder (Clare Collins).”

Most children are too young to know the difference. In an article sponsored by the Pediatrics for Parents, kid care specialist Michele Knox says "It is plausible to argue that [corporal punishment] of toddlers will have a greater effect [than it does on older kids] because it occurs at a crucial developmental stage.” While you are hitting your children you could be affecting serious brain growth. Toddlers are too young to understand why you are spanking them and what they did wrong. The child doesn’t comprehend the good from the bad. They learn through words and tone of voice. Also, they do not know why they are being punished. In the article, titled Spare the rod? Maybe, it offers an alternative to spanking by simply talking to them. "You must go to your room. I'm so disappointed in the way you're behaving. You are a good boy, a smart boy, but you are annoying me." (Lemonick, Michael D.; Park, Alice.) This way you are addressing what happened and you have chosen a punishment like going to your room. This is effective because the child now knows what it did wrong. You also acknowledge that the child is smart and good but their actions are

Spanking has been an effective way for parents to reprimand their children if they misbehave or act inappropriately. Until recently, spanking has been a culturally acceptable form of punishment for children between the ages of one to five. In fact, 65% of 3-year-old children had been spanked within the last month (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2017). However, many disagree with the idea of spanking their children, due to the fact that it may cause more aggressive behavior. Instead of spanking, people have turned to a warmth parenting style which includes “affection, comfort, concern, nurturance, support, and good old fashioned love (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2018) .”…

There is a huge difference between spanking and beating. Research shows that 40% of people believe its wrong and 60% think its okay to spank a child. I am on of those 60% because children need to learn not to ignore their parents, act out in school, public,or in general. Those who believe that spanking is wrong say that it’s teaching your child that its okay to hit others that’s not true,it…

A significant amount of emphasis is placed on what the child gains from being spanked on a deeper and more meaningful level when parents do follow healthy guidelines. Children learn that they must be responsible for their actions. By asking them why they made the choice that they did, they have to own up to their mistakes and eventually admit and come to the realization that what they did was wrong. Along with this, once what was done wrong is recognized by the child, sincere remorse follows. While this sounds burdensome and heavy, it’s part of learning.…

Spanking shows that “stronger” is right. When you use physical punishment to show a child that they did something wrong, you are sending the unintended effect of a message that whomever is bigger and stronger decides what’s right. Does this mean your child can control what’s right when he or she becomes stronger than you? Spanking demonstrates that older people have a right to hit younger people, sending the message that older, bigger people have the right to smaller people. This is especially confusing when you’re disciplining a child for hitting…

In contrast to what the world says, with the preceding understanding of course, there is a time to spank our children. The Bible is clear on this point. "He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly" (Prov. 13:24). It's a loving thing to spank our children in appropriate circumstances. If we don't, they're in danger of continuing down a path that becomes more dangerous over time and leads to destruction.…

The Spanking Controversy Four out of five Americans believe it is “sometimes appropriate” to spank a child (Horton). Does painful punishment build a better person? Over the years, there has been a lot of back and forth controversy over whether or not it is an acceptable form of punishment for parents to spank their children. This subject is interesting because I have a 3 year old son who is wild and crazy, and sometimes does not do as he is told.…

Spanking should be used to express only wanting the best for the child. All children don’t respond the same to every punishment tactic. Using other forms of discipline such as time outs, having consequences, or harder jobs around the house could also be good ideas to discipline the child. Spankings could be done after trying other options but disciplining a child is very…

I agree, in my opinion spanking your child can be an effective way to administer punishment especially if the child is caught in the act of doing something wrong; but I think that if you were to spank the child a while after he or she has already done something wrong it would not be as effective as being caught in the act. As a child, I can remember when my parents would give me a spanking for something I did wrong and most of the time if they caught me in the act and punished me right then and there it stuck better in my head. For example, when I was around 9 years old my dad taught me how to hunt for doves every season we would hunt doves and shoot them.…

When raising a child, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parents to teach their children right from wrong. There are many different methods of disciplining a child. Some are viewed as more “acceptable” than others. Whether parents chose the more “acceptable” method, such as a time out, or the less “acceptable” method of spanking, both are trying to teach discipline. Webster’s dictionary defines spanking as “to strike on the buttocks with an open hand” (O’Callaghan 2).…

In disciplining children, parents should do everything as kindly and gently as they can first. They should try to understand a child, make sure the child understands what is expected of them, use reasoning and find an adequate nonphysical consequence, like a "timeout" or taking away privileges. But if the child won't cooperate, some kids — at least some of the time — need something more forceful to back it up. b) Establishes Respect Many kids who grew up getting spank by their parents are more respectful to adults c) Disciplinary Tool When used correctly, spanking is safe and effective, and can be an appropriate tool for parents.…

The furry which build up within the child from being hit provides them with the ability to think hitting is acceptable. This is where the rebellious, aggressive children come from. When children become aggressive or mischief they can hurt someone or something else, through these behaviors. This puts the parents, surrounding environment and the child themselves in harm’s way. The physical discipline of spanking causes children to become aggressive and gain deficits or disorders which can further provide them with struggles in the…
