Walt Whitman is considered one of the greatest poets in history for incorporating new forms of writing in his poems. He developed free verse, a style many modern rap artists utilize. For these reasons, his impact on American poetry is also akin to the impact rap has had on American music. Firstly, Whitman often produced poetry that did not conform to the standard rhyme and meter of earlier works.…
In today’s world, the genre of romance has a very different connotation than it did over 150 years ago. Nowadays, romance novels are typically about two people falling in love and living happily-ever-after. However, in the beginning to mid 1800’s, the idea of Romance didn’t have much to do with relationships. The era of Romanticism was one that was marked by a strong contrast against the ideals of the more scientific Enlightenment that had occurred some years previously. It is in this period that many famous writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, and many more first made their presence known as serious American authors.…
Edgar Allen Poe and Harper Lee have vastly different tone and style when writing. While still developing complex themes, Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, is not as dramatic and dark as many of Poe’s stories. In, To Kill a Mockingbird, protagonist, Scout Finch, learns about herself, her family, and the society over a course of three years when her father, Atticus Finch, defends a black man in court during the early 20th century. Edgar Allan Poe, however, writes more twisted stories than Harper Lee. In his story, “The Black Cat”, a kind, loving, passionate animal lover, succumbs to the temptation of alcoholism and murders his wife and favorite pet.…
Edgar Allen Poe died in Baltimore on October 7th, 1849. This is a great shame as he was one of the greatest literary minds this country has ever produced. He will certainly be known as one of the best horror and mystery authors of all time, as well as one of the first. Poe had very few friends, if any, but his literary accomplishments were too great for his death to go unnoticed.…

During the 1800’s, many authors struggled to find their unique writing styles. Most found their inspiration from European literature, using the same style and basic plot lines. However, two authors found their unique style, which highlighted a darker storyline. Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne each had a writing style that stood out from the rest, which made their works more impactful and interesting to readers. Their short stories delved into a new type of writing style, American Romanticism and a subsection, American Gothic literature.…
At the turn of the 20th century, the American people experienced a turbulent change in the way they viewed the world. During the preceding Romantic Period, originating in Europe towards the end of the 18th century, literature and thought focused on hopeful longing, romantic optimism and an abundant use of flowery, complex language, both in the spoken and written word. Romantic poets such as John Keats and William Wordsworth used intricate metaphors and descriptive imagery to give vast, inspiring meaning to their works, which usually encompassed topics such as love, life and belonging. To describe the beauty of this time period, French poet Charles Baudelaire stated, "to say the word Romanticism is to say modern art -- that is, intimacy, spirituality,…

Dark Romanticism is a genre that began as a result of the Transcendentalist movement. Ralph Waldo Emerson saw only the best parts of life, and no matter how tragic something seems there is always a positive side. Emerson 's views were not shared by everybody, and so Dark Romanticism was born. Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville only saw the dark things with all aspects of life, and did not believe that mankind would have a happy future (Witkowska). Many poets are very different and some are revolutionary. Almost all poets before Whitman wrote with a pattern in their poetry, but Whitman changed that and became the father of free verse poetry. In Dickinson 's poetry it reflects her loneliness in her life and most of the people in her poetry are in a state of want. These poets are very different and have really changed the direction of poetry over time. Whitman and Dickinson poems are similar yet very different at the same time.…
He dug himself out of his depression with the help of his wife, but unfortunately spiraled back down after her sudden death. To illustrate the darkness of his works, he is known as the Father of Poetic Horror, though the title is not needed, because his works are a true testament to that. He uses repetition and rhythm to state a point, while showing true emotion in his work. He uses rhyme in many of his works to show his feelings and positions on the topics he speaks about. Lastly he uses dark Irony, sometimes to antagonize people in his poems, and sometimes, to show his hatred and ill will towards characters, who in his mind transition into the real world.…

In literature, there is a cornucopia of authors whose works are arguably more different than they are similar. However, even through the seemingly stark contrast of various authors, there are similarities that are way too often overlooked or just unconsidered. Edgar Allan Poe and Washington Irving were authors most renowned for their short stories during the Romantic Era of literature, each having their own unique style. Poe was known for his use of horror and the dark characteristics of human nature, and Irving for his use of fantasy and humor of different varieties. Two seemingly different approaches to literature by two seemingly different authors . . .…
Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were two highly influential poets from America during the 1800’s; critics as being radical as it rejected the traditional conventions of death in a dominantly Puritan state describe their poetry. Both poets were fascinated by the theme death throughout their poetry, although their depictions of death were different, both poets shared the similar concept that death leads to immortality and therefore should be embraced. However, despite sharing similarities in their overall message, both Whitman and Dickinson possessed unique writing styles different from the other. This can be seen in Whitman’s epic A Song of Myself, which employs the use of free verse; a form not constricted by regular rhyme or meter. Dickinson’s…
