Music plays an instrumental role throughout our lives. Before we’re born, many of us are exposed to music in the womb. Upon death, music greets us once again to mourn and celebrate a life filled with music. Music is truly there in every part of our life. Despite this constant exposure to music, we rarely step back to ponder how music impacts us.…
Many people who experience symptoms of mental health or who have been diagnosed with a mental illness have stated that they felt as though their symptoms are dismissed, or lessened (Itkowitz, 2016). As much as there has been progress with many shows changing the narratives of mental illness and online supports, there is still a definite stigma attached to being diagnosed with mental illness (Itkowitz, 2016). I decided to read Megan Rotatori’s survival story. I chose to read her story because I saw her picture and thought that she appears to be someone who many people would not believe to have a mental health diagnosis (Rotatori, 2014). The 20-year-old college student who is currently studying nursing at University of Vermont stated that she…
Introduction: Deinstitutionalization of mental health facilities has been a major issue in Canada for centuries. Deinstitutionalization is a process of closing down facilities and integrating these patients into society (Lamb, 2010). In the 17th and 18th centuries, very little was known about mental illness. In these times, it was believed that institutionalization had negative impacts on both patients and staff and these symptoms of mental illness were associated with criminality and evil spirits (Morrow, 2010). Mental health is such a prominent issue in Canada and affordable care is scarce.…
During tragedy we focus on what needs to done to save others. First responders are the very first people we see during a very traumatic and stressful time. However, first responders see communities and people in very crude situations. Even though this is their job to respond to traumatic events in communities and other people’s lives, it does not mean they are mentally immune to trauma. It is very important to monitor the mental health of first responders to keep them emotionally stable and for them to excel at their position.…
I was nine when I discovered my brother had paranoid schizophrenia. After overhearing a commotion coming from downstairs, I quietly peered into my family room. There my brother laid, red faced, hyperventilating, and yelling for the things filling his mind to stop. I witnessed the confusion upon my mother’s face, wondering why her twenty year old son would not stop screaming. This initial memory of my brother’s condition would be the beginning of an eight year crusade to combat his illness.…
The Fault in the Mental Health System Mental health issues effect more lives than a murder. They can effect grandfathers, grandmothers, mothers, fathers, siblings, and friends. In the story, The Glass Castle written by Jeanette Walls, there is a theme of mental illness within the family, especially with the mother. Mental illnesses can be caused by many different things. In The Glass Castle, Jeanette says, “Life 's too short to care about what other people think. Besides, they should accept us for who we are”. This is an example of how mental illness might be able to change someone, but people need to embrace who they are and not let other people make assumptions about how people act because life 's too short and needs to be enjoyed.…

Counselors in this process should be able to identify and implement a rapid response to dealing with a client when he or she is having a crisis. As stated in the, The 12 Core Functions of the Substance Abuse Counselor “IC and RC defines crisis intervention as those services which responds to an alcohol and/or other drugs abuser’s need during acute emotional and/or physical distress” (Herdman, 2013). Crisis intervention by all accounts is a very short, limited time interaction between the counselor and the client. The counselor must identify the problem that has the client in crisis at the present time and keep both themselves and the client focusing on the problem causing the crisis. Distracting issues will come up during the discussion, clouding the issue that needs to be dealt with to get the client out of crisis. The counselor needs to identify the problem that needs to be dealt with, how if any it has been dealt with before, and the client’s ability to function both in the past and at this point. The counselor must then use methods from Step A to gather all this information and come up with new ways that the client is capable of using to deal with the situation that has put them in…
Psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and other mental health professionals can provide support to individuals who need coping mechanisms, therapy, and trauma advice, among many other things. Social workers go further and use aspects of Sociology as they attempt to understand individuals from a micro, mezzo, and macro level. Many times, individuals do not want to have contact with a social worker, or are court-mandated to see one. People may not even realize or wish to recognize that they need help. I was able to volunteer in a crisis line and sometimes the calls were from individual’s loved ones who wanted them to talk with me.…
