The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, four siblings walk through a wardrobe and into the fantasy land of Narnia. Pembroke Meadows Elementary school needs engaging books to fill their Little Free Library, which is a neighborhood book exchange. C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe deserves a spot in the Little Free Library because it builds children’s character, because it is a timeless classic, and because it aligns with what students at Pembroke Meadows Elementary would read.

There is a plethora of mythical beasts in the book, such as dwarves, elves, and other talking beasts (Lewis). In the second grade reading surveys, there were multiple mentions of students liking books with animals as characters. One of the main characters in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the lion, named Aslan, who is the guardian of the siblings. In the Pembroke Meadows survey, many of the top books had animals play prominent roles in the story (“Pembroke Meadows Elementary Top Titles.”) The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was made into a movie, which helps the book become more popular. In an interview with one second grader at Old Donation School, the interviewee had watched the movie, but had not read the book, which shows how the movie could make the book more popular in the Little Free Library. This is also exemplified in the reading surveys of Reading Buddies, where one of the favorite movies of one second grader was the Chronicles of Narnia. As a result of its popularity and that it was the first book published, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has become the face of the series called the Chronicles of Narnia. This helps kids who want to read more about the land of Narnia find more books that are in the series, even though C.S. Lewis himself was not planning to write a series (Higgins).
