This report will explain the concept and theory of The Hero’s Journey and provide an analysis of the film, The Lion King. This report will also explain how the film’s storyline fits into the concept by first explaining what The Hero’s Journey entails and outlining the stages of this narrative structure that appear in the film.

Simbas birth makes his uncle Scar second in line to the throne, and Scar plots revenge with his hyena henchmen. They come up with a plan to kill King Mufasa and Simba, thus making Scar king of the Pridelands. Mufasa is killed, Scar convinces Simba that it is his fault and Simba flees the Pridelands in shame. He is discover by a meerkat named Timon and warthog named Pumbaa. He grows up away from the Pridelands, and as everyone there thinks that Simba is dead, Scar and the hyenas rule. Simba’s friend Nala goes out and finds Simba, and she and Rafiki convince him to go back to the Pridelands and challenge Scar. He also makes many allies throughout the movie, mainly Nala, Timon and Pumbaa.
7. Approach to the Innermost Cave
Scar and Simba circle each other. Scar flicks some embers into Simbas eyes and they begin fighting.
8. The Ordeal
Simba fights Scar, then throws him off of a ledge into a pack of vengeul hyenas.
9. The Reward
Simba climbs Pride Rock and restores his place as the rightful king of the Pridelands.
10. The Road Back
The Pridelands return to their former lush and green state.
11. The Resurrection
Simba accepts the fact that he is the rightful king of the Pridelands, and begins his rule.
12. Return with the Elixir
Simba and Nala have a cub, completing the cycle of The Hero’s Journey stages.
Overall, The Lion King follows Vogler’s Hero’s Journey stages almost exactly, as all stages are present but they are not all in the correct order. This is more than likely related to the films success and popularity because it appealed to most people. The structure of The Hero’s Journey appeals to society and humans in general because it is a cycle we all repeat over and over in our everyday lives, and therefore we can relate more closely to the
