The Lion King is a direct run off of the play Hamlet. Though The Lion King was based off the play, there are still differences. The way Hamlet handles his father’s death varies differently from the way that Simba handles his Father’s death. There are also similarities. The similarities are the most evident in how the characters die in these two works. It is so interesting to know that The Lion King is based on the play Hamlet! Though they look completely different, and they are set up in different scenarios, the fate of the characters are significantly similar. One of the first similarities shown in the film of The Lion King is when Scar kills Mufasa. Mufasa is the king, and Scare is the jealous uncle who desperately wants to rule on the throne. Simba and Hamlet both had two very close friends that they could confide in. In Hamlet, Hamlet had two friends, Guildenstern and Rosencrantz. In The Lion King, Simba’s friends were Timon and Pumba. The difference between the two sets of friends is that Simba’s friends are loyal to Simba, whereas Hamlet’s friends were not loyal to him. The king sent Hamlet’s friends to retrieve information from Hamlet and to take Hamlet to England to be killed. (Shakespeare page 116) Hamlet’s friends were not loyal to him at all. Simba’s friends were! They taught him how to survive in the forest and not to worry. They taught him the meaning of “Hakuna Matata”, meaning no worries. (The Lion King) They were his true friends. They were also trusted by Simba, because they watched over Simba’s daughter. It is obvious that Simba thought very highly of the two of them, and he appreciated everything they did for him.
