Personal Narrative: The Teen Who Speaks 20 Languages

“The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” Ludwig Wittgenstein. I came to realize this after I was influenced by many people. Specifically, after attending my language teachers classes, and understanding her view and passion about foreign languages. Also, I was inspired, and even more motivated into the world of different languages after watching an eight-minute video about a teenage hyperpolyglot. However, I only became fully engrossed in learning different languages and cultures after listening to one of my favorite foreign bands named BTS. Undoubtedly these people inspired and motivated me to learn as many languages and understand as many cultures as I possibly can. The one who showed me a new side to the world and …show more content…

This is because he was a self-taught teenage hyperpolyglot or as the media called him “The Teen Who Speaks 20 Languages!”. I was able to find him because of his video "American Polyglot Practicing 20 Languages" that has millions of views, which opened my eyes to a world of more possibility to learn more languages. At the age of thirteen, he started to learn his journey of learning languages, without a doubt the number of languages he speaks encourages me to try harder. It makes me believe that if he can learn twenty languages in seven years by himself than I can learn that many too, probably. What further caught my attention the varying languages he preferred to speak. To explain, most beginning language learners usually start with a European language because of its similarities to English. Doner, however, chose to start learning a language from the middle east. Moreover, his preferred languages are almost random, he can speak Russian, Mandarin and many other languages I’ve never heard before like Pashto. His unpredicting way of choosing another language to speak motivated me to try to learn random languages around the world for fun. The thing that motivates me the most is his amazing discipline and focus on learning. For instance, Doner spends every morning and most of his free time improving his language skills by talking to street vendors or using foreign media

One indicator, of a teenager struggling to establish their identity, would be that the teenager begins to outwardly reject the establishment of their parents. This is usually the most notable conflict between parent and teenager as it creates a clash of ideals between the individuals. During this rejection and rebellion stage, teenagers may seek out religious practices that are different than their parents. By rejecting the preference of the parent; the teenager is not disregarding or discounting the religion of the parent, but merely searching for a religion that the individual can make their own.…

When I was younger my mother once told me of a biblical story in which a town would come together in order to purge themselves of sin. They would gather up a lone goat and hurl rocks and spew profanities, in many ways harming it within an inch of its life as it bled out upon the earth. They would then open the gates of the town and let the goat run away and carry all of their sins, transgressions, and their insecurities out into the wilderness in where the goat, along with all their sin, would perish. This in turn purged the town and cleansed them of their ways until it was time again to rid themselves of their wickedness. Now, as a young child I was appalled by such a story and such horrible people who could inflict pain upon an innocent being…
