Throughout our discussion of French realism we see the concepts of materialism and selfishness prominently. Similarly we constantly see similar circumstances, values, and overall how society today has not differentiated from how it was in this period. While the means of these similarities have changed, you can still see the same fundamental principles in both times. One prime example of this is how material possessions dictate where we stand in society along with how we stand socially. In today's times, phones, clothes, cars, and other possessions have become as important, or even more so than personality and other intangible traits.…

Imagine someone being in a crumbling building, crushed under ruble and their only hope of survival looks them square in the eye then flees the building even though they wouldn’t be hurt if they helped. Are they selfish? Survivors are often selfish, they only live to tell the tale unscathed because they abandoned people in need of their help. Survivors lack the consideration for others, caring for their wants of comfort more than others needs of survival. Peter singer offers this approach in his essay and supports that us humans must help the needy by donating to charity because it is a moral obligation. I totally agree with this viewpoint because having people on the streets starving with no shelter is a bad sight. Peter Singer, an Australian moral philosopher, argued that individuals are morally obligated to help the poor. He states that “if it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening, without sacrificing anything of comparable moral importance, we ought, morally, to do it” (Singer 1). This means that we should donate as much of our resources, whether it be time, money, etc., as possible to those less fortunate without causing oneself to be in the same situation as those you are trying to help. You do not want to donate too much of your money to the extent where you cannot afford to support yourself and those dependent on you.…
