S.V. was born in Oaxaca, Mexico on September 12, 1928. She was the oldest sibling out of 10 brothers and sisters. She moves to Huajuapan de Leon, Oaxaca when she was 16 years old, it was there where she met her husband. S.V. currently lives with her son in Des Plaines, Ill. She dressed very conservative; she has on a long black skirt, a long sleeve navy blue blouse and on top has a black shall. She mentioned to me that she wears black a lot because she in still mourning the death of her husband, who died 5 years ago. Her room is very cozy, covered with a lot of throw blankets and pillows, it is also very organized and she has a lot of pictures of her children and grandchildren. S.V. parents were married through an arranged marriage so S.V. knew she would have to do the same for that was the part of the culture in Mexico at that time. Fortunately for S.V. her father did not make her marry someone she didn’t want to. S.V. had the choice so marry a rich businessman from town or a farmer from Veracruz, Mexico. She fell in love with the farmer and she married him in 1946. They had 8 children and were married for 53 years. One quote I really liked that she said was “Money doesn’t buy you happiness.” She could have easily been rich and been well off in life but instead she chose the farmer and was very happy living that life. S.V. didn’t go to school because at that time in Mexico it was not accustomed to send girls to school so she never learned how to read and write, she was an at home stay mom and loved every second of it. She was kind of strict with her children because she wanted the best for them; she had 6 boys and 2 girls. She mentioned that her boys were troublemakers in school but she had such good times with them. She is very religious and Sunday mass was always something she looked forward to with her
