Allegory Of The Cave Analysis

Many people never leave the safety of their home town. They never leave and explore the outside world. This makes them like the people in Plato’s story, “The Allegory of the Cave”. Those people never left the safety of the cave. One person did and when they told the others he or she was met with disbelief and terror. The people in the cave did not want change. They were comfortable with the little knowledge they had. I am one of the very few who are fortunate to escape the cave and see the real world. Mexico, Missouri is like the cave and the rest of the world is change. Every year I leave the cave by going on a family vacation. We have gone a family vacation every year since I was in first grade. Ever since I have had a travel bug. I have always wanted to see all 50 states. My family and I are very close to completing that goal. We have seen 48 out of the 50 states. The only two we have not seen are Alaska and Hawaii. I have also been to Canada and Puerto Rico. Travelling has opened my eyes to what people outside of Mexico, Missouri. Every time my family and I travel, my eyes are opened to the world again. Being in Mexico all year dulls my senses to what the rest of the world is like. Each place is different and has their own …show more content…
Even though Puerto Rico is a territory of the USA, it is so much different than the rest of the cities I have visited. In Puerto Rico they speak three different languages: English, Spanish, and English and Spanish mixed together. That sometimes made it hard to communicate with them. Also, their landscape is so much different. In Puerto Rico they have beaches and jungles. It was such a beautiful place to visit. Their architecture is very different than in America. They have a lot of old Spanish style buildings. Puerto Rico is so much different than anything I have ever seen in America, and I was glad to have the eye opening experience I had

The Truman show directed by Peter Weir and the dialogue “Allegory the Cave” written by Plato, both represent what an individual sees as the only truth when they are controlled by the man made truth. In the Truman show, it's a show where Truman Burbank has lived his whole life being broadcasted 24 hours, living in a false world without knowing the truth . Similar to the “Allegory the Cave” in where Plato explains 2 individuals are chained to a wall since childhood and all they see is shadows by the fire, the prisoners only see the shadows as the only truth they know. Both, The Truman Show and “Allegory the Cave” demonstrate how both individuals experience the false reality and experience the same journey.…

In his Allegory of the Cave, Plato suggests that reality may be very different from what we imagine it to be. We can see this in the novel Ubik where the inertials experience illusions rather than reality. Some people are comfortable with living in their own reality, which is based on their subjective ideas on the world. Plato believes we should all seek to escape from this “cave”, our realities, made up of false perceptions and face the harsh realities although it can cause us pain. Just like the inertials had to face the reality that they were all in half-life and that they would eventually die.…

In “The Allegory of the Cave,” an important distinction is made between two types of people, people who are blissfully ignorant and people who are painfully enlightened. The people who are blissfully ignorant choose to see things as they think they are; they mistake appearance for reality. These are the people who remain shackled to the wall, are unable to move their legs or heads, and, “see only their own shadows, or the shadows of one another” (Plato 587). These people remain in the darkness, refuse to suffer by becoming knowledgeable, and enjoy their blissful state. Conversely, those people who are painfully enlightened see things as they are; they do not mistake appearance for reality, rather, they see reality as it is.…

The Allegory of the Cave by Plato was written somewhere between 380 and 360B.C. in part VII of his work The Republic. It begins with the main character Socrates talking of a hypothetical cave in which prisoners are kept in bonds to see what are essentially shadow puppets upon the wall they are forced to stare at, believing them to be the reality of the outside world as they have no other frame of reference. Socrates goes on to say that if the prisoners were to be freed from their bonds they would most likely wander about the cave as they would have no knowledge of what else to do. Once they discovered the mouth of the cave, however, they would be temporarily dazzled, perhaps even blinded, by their first encounter with sunlight and may…

Finally, the moral is that the prisoners that relied on their perceptions to know the truth about what existed in the outside world do not know anything about it. Perceptions are only how we as individuals view things and not how they truly are. People are like the prisoners in the cave because they believe the things they see are how they truly are, rather than thinking beyond what they…

Allegory of the Cave” is a philosophical parable or analogy from Plato’s The Republic, written around 380 BC. Exploring themes of knowledge, perception, and the importance of education, it takes the form of a discussion between Plato’s brother, Glaucon, and his teacher and mentor, Socrates. Although this dialogue was almost certainly scripted by Plato, it is not clear whether the idea itself is Plato’s own or his record of Socrates’s thoughts. The allegory begins with Plato’s Socrates describing a group of humans held in a deep, dark cave. They have been imprisoned there since childhood, their necks and legs bound so they cannot turn to see themselves, each other, or the rest of the cave.…
