John F. Kennedy was a hardball. There is no wonder why he made so many enemies during his time in office. The economic elites were floored by Kennedy 's, in their eyes, radical views towards the economy. During the Steel Crisis, Kennedy was fighting a battle on both side trying to negotiate a suitable solution to reduce inflation convincing workers to lower their salary demands only to double-crossed by Steel company executives who rose prices, even though Kennedy had already settled that they would not if the union lowered their demands (Calder 102). To this the president lashed out at companies by saying, "to accept a situation in which a tiny handful of steel executives, whose pursuit of private power and profit exceeds their sense of public responsibility, can show such utter contempt for the interest of 185 million Americans."
