Psychologically Weak
When I think about the life I’ve had, many of the memories that come to my mind are happy and joyful. The bad things that have happened have been pushed to the small back corner of my mind, never to be thought about again, unless needed. Those bad memories do not follow me around, or dictate any of my life decisions. They stay where I filed them away to, in the back. All of my life has been filled with family, friends, love, and happiness. I am so grateful for that, but take a child who has been living in a war torn country they don’t have a life like this to think back on. That seemed like an odd thing to me, but when I was talking to Rachel who I mentioned earlier, she shared that the number of refugees let into our country is determined by Congress. The numbers are growing and growing year by year. In 2016, we should have 86,000 plus refugees coming into our country. By 2017, America should have at least 100,000 refugees in our country. Another thing that Rachel shared with me that I found extremely interesting was that our country and community should think about refugees as “enrichers” not “burdens”. This intrigued me because it was a really different perspective on what everyone else had shared with me. Rachel brought to my attention how many good things that refugees bring to our country. These new “enrichers” as said by Rachel bring new languages, foods, religions, and customs to our country. After all, we are called the melting pot so we should be looking forward to expanding our country 's growth. I also agree with what Rachel said, I think our country shouldn’t turn a cheek, per say, because these new people are fresh and they bring a new ingenuity to America. In the media, many refugees are portrayed as a bad thing that is infesting our country and I believe that we should be changing this perspective on refugees. So far, America is treating refugees as something they just have to deal with. I think that we should be moving into a forward thinking mentality. At the moment our country is helping refugees “settle in” for 90 days. Our government provides them with cultural orientation to prepare for them for the culture shock. As well our country preps the refugees with enough money and a place to live for 90 days. They than are on their own, and able to contact a refugee agency.
