Commemorative Speech Of A Mother

Improved Essays
Good Evening,
I am truly honored to have this opportunity to celebrate the life of a most special woman and to share with you a few thoughts about Mom’s life and legacy.
Many of you may not know that we affectionately and sometimes teasingly, called Mom “Bubbles.” In fact, she would usually sign her cards to us with Love from Dad and Bubbles. While it is true that Mom was not normally vivacious and outgoing, in her own way she was always quietly effervescent. Never the center of attention, but always the one behind the scenes making sure that everything and everyone was taken care of.
Mom was truly a woman ahead of her time. Had she been born decades later there is no doubt that she would have had an extraordinarily successful career. She

Her embroidered samplers tell stories and capture important historical events in our family. Her quilts are whimsical and fun - conveying a personal, emotional and meaningful connection to the recipient, such as frogs for my son Alex and fairies for my daughter Marissa. Her sculptures reflect the innocence of young faces. Her gardens told another story as she blended nature’s gifts in harmonious and colorful patterns to showcase their individual exquisite beauty and compliment the natural surroundings. Then she would place a statue or two - a rabbit, a duck, a little boy – among the foliage to complete the picture and a new piece of art was created. It is solely because of Mom that I too became a gardener. And even though I know that no matter how hard I try I will never achieve the same results in my many gardens, the rabbit, duck and little boy sit contentedly among my flowers and I know that Mom would be happy there.
Mom was one of the hardest working people I have ever met. She rarely sat down to relax and her hands were never idle. She had the keen ability to work on multiple projects at the same time and would always have a sampler, drawing, painting or quilt “in the works.” Every time we visited she would prepare a special meal or dessert – from her famous ice box cake to her “cookies.” We looked forward to her homemade hot fudge sauce (really who had the time and energy back then to make homemade sauce!) And

And that Scott and I will never again witness the love, thoughtfulness, generosity, strength of spirit and creativity that she emboldened. But we only have to look no further than our children to see that what made mom so special is inherent in them. Although Mom is no longer with us, she lives on through our children who have all inherited one or more of her unique and special attributes. Our son Alex, who is graduating from Art and Design school this spring, possesses mom’s keen eye and creative flair. Kyle has her quiet demeanor and fortitude and Marissa received her strength and courage to be a pioneer ahead of her time. How blessed and fortunate we are that our children received such enormous gifts from this extraordinary woman. She resides in their very souls and spirits and these gifts will only serve to make them extraordinary

Being forced to abandon a safe haven can cause one to hopelessly cling to the memories created there. In Gerda Klein’s memoir, All But My Life, she and her family are forced to leave their house. In this excerpt, she wanders throughout her garden for one last time. She then starts to reminisce about all the memories created there and realizes that her life will never be the same again, she has truly lost the innocence that her childhood once possessed. Through the use of concrete diction and juxtaposing imagery, Klein establishes a nostalgic yet sorrowful tone to illustrate how one can cling to their past yet cannot avoid the inevitable future, which causes them to see the world around them in a new light.…

I tried on several occasions to write a eulogy for my mother. If I had made the effort by hand, all that you would have seen would have been an enormous pile of paper balls tossed in and around the trash basket.
