Substance When I refer to substance, also mean content; not just of our actions, but of ourselves. Intend for it to come from within. As in“who are you;” “to know thyself;” to know why you act as you do. Both Socrates and Epicurus believed; “the unexamined life is not worth living” (de Botton, A., 2001, p. 4). Substance might even bear with it a little pain, that the positives in our lives may be the results of a little discomfort; “not everything which makes us feel better is good for us. Not everything which hurts may be bad” (de Botton, A., 2001, p. 244). “We should not feel embarrassed by our difficulties, only by our failure to grow anything beautiful from them,” after all life is not about what happens to us, but how we handle it (de Botton, A., 2001, p. 228). I am a manifestation of all my thoughts and experiences, not all good in the moment but always important retrospectively. In Nietzsche’s writings, he tried to explain that if we “cut ourselves off from the suffering, we cut ourselves off from a good life” ("Book Discussion on The Consolations of Philosophy," 2000). That wealth, or fulfillment did not always come simply, we should prepare ourselves for a world in which bad things do happen, failures happen, so we can already plan how to rise pass them.
