After he left the ship, he stayed in Pairs and continued to develop and publish his poems. In 1924, Hughes returned to the United States and worked as a busboy in a Washington, D.C. Once, while Hughes was working at a hotel restaurant, he saw the American poet Vachel Lindsay sitting there. “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” was his first published poem, and he wrote it down when he saw the Mississippi River in the train to Mexico. “Through the images of the river, Hughes traces the history of the African American from Africa to America.”(Enotes) Hughes described that the river played an important role of human history and it carried people’s knowledge and soul.
