Just about every human being on this earth has heard of Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey is the epitome of success. She is beautiful, happy, and a whole person. She is know for being the most successful talk show host, the first African American woman to own her on production company, and she now has her own television network called OWN. Even though she is the most successful woman on earth, she has gone through many tribulations to get to where she is now. Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29,1954 out of wedlock to two teenage parents (Lutz). Due to her parents being young, Oprah was raised by her grandmother on a farm near Kosciusko, Mississippi. From taking over Nashville, to thee big streets of Chicago Oprah’s success climbed the upward slope faster than anyone had ever before. Oprah first big successful moment came when she won the Elks Club oratorical contest(Lutz). Oratorical contest os revolved around public speaking. By winning this contest, she guaranteed herself a full ride to Tennessee State University. While attending Tennessee State, she became Miss Black Nashville and Miss Tennessee( Lutz). Because of her eloquent speaking skills, she landed the job as coanchor of WTVF-TV making her the first African American female anchor in Nashville(Lutz). Because Winfrey was so good at connecting with people, her network transferred her to a talk show. After Oprah’s first episode on “People are Talking” she said, “This is what I was born to do. This is like breathing”(Lutz). In this instant Oprah discovered her passion. In January 1984, Oprah took a huge risk not knowing if it would payoff. Oprah moved from Nashville to Chicago to compete with the,King of Talk shows,Phil Donahue. Oprah took the biggest risk of her career by making this big mode to Chicago. This moved proved that she has the characteristics of a risk taker. Being a risk taker can determine if you get your big opportunity ,or if you miss it because you are to afraid to take it. By looking into Oprah’s life, I have learned many characteristics that I can implement into my own road map to success. Before understanding how Oprah made here big break in the entertainment business, I never would have taken risk when it come to my career, but now I see that taken risk is the key to everyones success. If you are not willing to take risk, then your payoff will not be as great. Furthermore, Oprah’s life has taught me that to be successful you do not only need to be willing to learn, but also you need to be relatable, fearless, and an overcomer. Through the skills I will be able to not only get a good job, but also build friendship and give back to my community.
