Unfortunately so many lives were taken away, before it was established. Although slavery became illegal, many African Americans had to now struggle with how they were going to survive, since throughout their slave years, their masters provided them with food. Another thing they to endure, was trying to accept themselves. The white Americans put the that mindset, that the only beauty there was, was having a fair complexion. African American were still bonded by chains by white Americans mentally, just no longer bonded physically. Many of them felt that there was no hope that they would be free from this atrocity.
